Paul – It’s fairly straightforward to feel your lower body swinging the club in practice swings but less easy in the actual swing. Even when I end up in the correct follow through position, I’m not sure if my hips led my arms or vice versa. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks for the great instruction –

Paul, your “favorite drill” is huge. I have now adopted it as part of the my pre-shot routine, trying to recreate the same feeling during the shot. The result is, indeed, gaining distance and constancy. The down part is, of course, changing distances and over shooting the green when using 7 or 8 irons for approach.

Question, though, should I apply the same drill or “feeling” to shorter pitches? While to margin for error with long clubs is wide, it is trickier with wedges, which has been causing me to tighten up.

    Thanks

      David,

Glad you like my favorite drill. Hopefully, everyone else will too. It can do so many things to help the swing.

The feeling with pitches is to turn our belt buckle left of the target so it is a different thought although it is the same move yet abbreviated.

This is also explained in my short game video series.

      Wade,

Funny how people still tell people to pull the arms down to start the downswing. Hopefully, with Hogan and other teachers such as myself focusing on the body we can get everyone using it to hit the ball. I will just keep doing my part.

  4. Paul ,I have an issue with my backswing ,which is More or less related to the hip rotation .I do rather succesfully your “POWERLESS ARMS + HIP FORWARD TURN” move ,but I exp

    • Raymond,

Just do practice swings in front of a mirror looking for the whole clubshaft above your head with every club. This is a visual thing. You should see the whole shaft. If you look up and your head is blocking out the shaft so you can’t visually see the whole thing then you are not up high enough. Keep doing this and it 2 weeks your arms should be trained to go up higher. Give it a try.

  5. Hey Paul,

Love all your favorite drills I am doing them everywhere even in my sleep!

    But I need another drill!

I do not know what controls the take-a-way distance from my ball moving back before it begins to rise up and around my body to a set position that will give me a chance to get the club head on a ninety 90 degree track.? I fell like my left arm is extending to an almost straight position and my right elbow is moving away from my hip? If I lock my right elbow or attempt to slide it around my right hip I loose the feeling of powerless arms?

    Help needed!

    Best Jay Jay

    Hi Paul,

My wife and love listening to your helpful videos. We notice that you have a soft left elbow and not a stiff and straight one at the top of your swing. Does this help or hinder distance? Does this hurt or help control? Does it matter at all?

    Appreciate a comment on this.

      Don and Barb,

Glad you like the tips. I truly appreciate the feedback and support.

I want the lead arm extended bu not locked. Too straight makes you too tight. I want you arms powerless when you swing. If you are trying to keep the arm locked you will be too tight and not be able to keep them powerless.

I have tried to get my arms straighter and just cannot do it. Jack Nicklaus as well as many other top pros do not keep their arms straight either. I did tip on this here:

      Left Arm at Top: https://ignitiongolf.com/left-arm-backswing

      Extended But Not Locked: https://ignitiongolf.com/extended-but-not-locked/

With my Game Golf stat tracker my Driver average is 281 yards so no it does not hamper distance.

If I practice I am very accurate as well so it does not affect accuracy if your arms are powerless. Powerless arms stops you from manipulating the club face. If the arms breaks at the top it just needs to be extended again as you hit the ball. If so, you do not lose the width of your arc. Buckled through impact (chicken wing) is a huge problem.

    Hi Paul,

Thanks so much for your fast and very concise answers. We got it! Now that you answered, I can remember you addressing that question before but we forgot (old age).

Just so you know, we are really working on changing our swing to what you teach. Just the follow through alone has helped us both with straighter shots.

We our your #1 fans. Not kissing up, just the truth.

    Hi Paul,

I have not done this drill before and doing it I feel in areas I have not felt before so probably a good drill for me to do.

I am chronic puller so I am very conscious of my head / spine position. Should I do this drill while keeping the head back or does it not matter ?
