It’s a great feeling to swing effortlessly and have the golf ball fly long and straight. It’s so simple, Paul. Thanks for your tireless variations on the theme. What works for me may not resonate for someone else and vice-versa.

    • Steven,

It is a great feeling. Glad you are experiencing it. I do try to think of alternate ways of saying things and of course try to hammer it home. Hopefully everyone will get it some day.

  2. Paul,

I notice that, on your downswing, your right shoulder gets pulled a lot lower than mine. Any thought for me to work on?

    • Jay,

I would think this is just me doing a faster leg drive than you. I am in no way thinking about the right shoulder. I am thinking uncoil. So the thought for you is coil … uncoil creating a spring-like effect. The arms are connected to this so they move when the body moves. Keep it simple.

  3. Hi Paul,

Does swinging with powerless arms naturally drop the right shoulder into the so-called “slot”, or is it better to feel the slot (right arm against the body) from backswing down through impact?

    Hope my question makes sense.

    Thank you.

  4. Could you, explain in details, how use the inside of the back leg and foot to obtain power instead of the arm.
What is the moment to press this area, how much pressure we can apply? What is the exactly are to press, the big toe only or the all the internal foot line or the internal foot ball with the big toe? Please explain this point.

  5. Paul, really enjoying the program. Just interested to see at address that your hands are slightly behind centre. I was under the impression that the hands should be pressed slightly forward. Just interested in your opinion of the hands at address position. Mike

    • Mike,

The more your hands are forward the more you run the risk of gripping on the side of the club. Once you do then move your hands back to where they should be the face is shut. Just try it but exaggerate when you do it. Place the grip of the club way ahead of the ball. When you do you will see that you cannot do the neutral grip. Instead, you will grip on the side of the club. Then move your hands back. As you do take a look at the face. It will be shut. This is why PING clubs were popular in the 80’s. It made people falsely shut the face due to the offset. I hate band aids.

        Paul:
I just noticed your PING comment. My irons are Taylor Rac OS2 irons from about 2005-6, somewhat offset. I seem to hit them to the left more often than to the right. Could it be that they’re the wrong clubs for me?

        • Steven,

I don’t know what level you are at but better players do not use offset clubs. If you are pulling it it may be due to the offset. For now, just keep working on using the lower body first. If the lower body starts first you should be hitting it straighter. If you want to try non-offset clubs do that too and see if it has any effect.

I wouldn’t be considered a “better” player, Paul, but I’m better than I was before I discovered your teaching. I will try a non-offset club as soon as I have the opportunity. Thanks for the advice.

    Hi Paul,
During the setup, with arms fully extended, should one feel pressure
    on the shoulder blades?

    • Eriab,

I feel pressure in the armpits not the shoulder blades. I would keep the shoulders relaxed if possible. Everyone is different so you may be feeling it there. Just keep the arms extended but not turned on.

  7. Your lesson on utilizing “Powerless Arms “is very useful and works fine for me.However ,you are more or less”pulling our leg “in saying the arms are powerless:when looking at your Video your Right arm extends way out in your through swing ,which means a powerful contraction has occurred at the top of the backswing enabling this extension of the right arm,in which you seem to throw your hand to the ball .
Of course you are fully relaxed in the action which promotes the best speed possible for this right arm .
The image you give is However very good ,and I repeat ,works fine !

    • Raymond,

I am not pulling your leg. You are not hitting or helping the shot in any way with your arms. This is what powerless arms means.

You can still have powerless arms even with a clenched fist. Just stand up. Clench your fist. Now turn left and turn right. Did you move your arm? No. You turned your body which moved your arm therefore your arms is powerless. You are not moving your arm in any way. Master it.

  8. Hi Paul,

Really hit the ball nice with powerless arms last Sunday. I am 10 HCP and I shot a very easy 78. I can feel the whipping action throught the ball. My right wrist was pretty sore after the round. I am 54 so I am guessing this is just the result of changing my swing ?

    • Brien,

That’s great news. You are starting to see the results of not hitting.

Not sure why your right wrist would be sore. Maybe you actually loosened it up and it was releasing more than you have in the past. If this is the case I would think you will get used to it. Just don’t over do it. Next round, be very careful not to try to hit the ball too hard. Swing easy and you will stay powerless. Try for more distance and you will tighten.

  9. When I create torsion in my swing (the head cover analogy) I try to start the downswing by turning my lower body first with my upper body lagging behind, that move seems to put a lot of stress on my left knee and it hurts somewhat. I’m just about 60 yrs old. Any ideas, or just start the down swing with my whole body and forget the lag.

    • Thomas,

Don’t do it so fast. Just get used to it first. You see me doing it right? I am not out of control or swinging real hard. I am coiling. I am uncoiling. Do this at a pace you can handle that is not going to hurt. Once you get better at it you speed it up a little. Get used to this then speed up again if you need to.

It’s amazing how people work on things. They always want to start off at top speed. You need to crawl before you can run.

In no way should my golf swing be hurting your body. If it is you are doing it wrong. Please slow down immediately and focus on perfect movement. The long drives will come in the future.

  10. Paul,

You have covered this before but i looked at this tonight; during the day i was on the range and swinging with out feeling the arms. I also found that i could speed up the lower body and get more distance, still not feling the arms. I was real pleased with my swing, direction & distance. Any suggestions?

  11. Paul,

I’ve been following you the past year and have started to experience the success of powerless arms. As I practiced your drills and techniques, I started to see limited success, but it has recently all started to work.

About 8 rounds ago, I had a terrible 9 holes with everyt other shot weak and thin. I had enough and started to walk off the course. Before I left, I decided to pratice on an empty hole and swing with absolutely no arms and a slower tempo. Finally, it all clicked. Since that day, I’ve played the best golf since I started ten years ago. 90 percent of my iron shots are compressing the ball and flying straight and good distance. Each round I slightly increase my lower body speed and have seen additional distance. As an added bonus, the dreaded green side bunker has become one of my favorite shots.

I’m still working on the driver, but that shot is starting to come along as we’ll.

I know this sounds like a commercial, but I can’t thank you enough. I always had pieces of your technique, and knew they would eventually help improve my game.

    • Marc,

Funny how it took a disastrous 9 holes to get you to totally loosen up. I’m glad you finally experienced it. It really is a great feeling. I just hope other read this and get it too. One day in the future enough people will get it that word gets out. Until that day I will just keep doing what I am doing.

  12. Paul. I could watch and listen to you hit that driver all day. Pow!!! And it looks like you could do it if your arms were just strings. So cool. This tip really clicked for me. No arms. Yes body and wrists. Thx again!!
    David

  13. Hi Paul, this powerless arms technique worked the very first time I tried it and I never looked back. Like the person above I was playing on the course and figured I had nothing to lose and it worked the very first time with the very first shot and have never had a problem with it since. I try to go faster with the lower body to get more distance which does work but not enough. I need loose arms but am very afraid to loosen the arms too much and get that really long ugly backswing that I used to have and have worked do hard to shorten. Do you have any suggestions. Strange how people look at me as if I don’t know anything when I describe my swing… it’s too bad because it’s so easy and wonderful, easier than what they are doing. . Thank you . Michelle

    • Michelle,

Yes, you do not want the really long backswing. This will lead to you pulling the club down with your arms. Once activated you will be using them to hit the ball again.

The backswing length should be based on the torque you are creating when you coil back. When you coil you get the tight feeling. As soon as you feel this you are at the top of the backswing. This will vary with all people because some people are looser or tighter than others.

So keep the lower body stable going back. Coil the shoulders until you get the tight feeling. Once tight, you uncoil the other way. Do this at a rate of speed you are good at it. Do drills etc. at home or at the range to try to get faster with the legs and hips. If you do this too hard on the course you will also hit harder with the arms. I would rather you do the moves perfect on the course a little slower. Perfection = distance. The more perfect you hit it the more distance you will get in the future.

Hey Paul, I love coming back to this tip to remind myself and to get some of that rhythm & tempo. Thanks

      Tom,

Everyone needs to be constantly reminded. I love it when someone says they’ve got it. They don’t. Saying this is the kiss of death. Glad you like to be reminded.
