Hi Dave , golf is a game that reveals how one deals with decision, choices and adversity and failure. I am presently a 28 handicap. I was at 36. Started at age 54 am now 56. I listen to you and Paul Wilson. My goal for next round is to do better by hitting 18 decent tee shots. I want 18 of just pop it out there. Either on the fairway or on/ close to the green. Achievable. Hope so. Kind regards. Harry

      Norman,

That is not a good enough goal. I was doing that after 1 year of playing and I didn’t hit many practice balls. I just worked on short game and played. Oh yeah, I was 13/14 yrs old playing the white tees.

Your goal should be low 80’s. This is easily doable if you work on the positions. Just have to do them daily in practice swings and build the swing. Grip, setup and follow through first. Then the backswing. It really is that simple.

        Paul,
I have to say that when I first read your reply I thought about defending my goal. But after thinking about it I can see how it would be wrong headed of you to think that your methods would only get me to bogey golf. I can also understand that if I fall a little short of my goal of bogey golf I would land where I am presently. I don’t want to be at 95. So low 80s is a much better goal.

        Thanks

          Norman,

Very good. Like I said, this is doable. You just need positions that are pretty good and a half decent short game. Once you get there your next goal is the 70’s. This too is doable. I once took a student from 95 to 75 in 2 months and he never hit one ball. I literally game him a 10 min lesson a week. The key is hitting few balls. The ball is the problem. If you do practice swings at home every day in a mirror you will build swing and take any hitting out of the picture. You go to the course to work on the short game and play. Do it this way and no joke you will be there in no time. Problem is people want to keep hitting golf balls so they don’t make the changes and just spin their wheels. Try it for the next month and see what happens. Why not? If you are in a colder climate then let’s do it over the winter. Just practice swings and build the swing. Then let’s see how good you are by next season. You will be amazed.

Why not? I have nothing to lose. As a matter of fact I will save money. On top of that I have been becoming more and more aware that the practice on the positions is where it’s at. I will say that my curiosity gets the best of me and I want to see if I’m making progress. I will keep that tamped down.

    Thanks Norm

      Norm,

Just stick to the plan. If you have a great swing you will hit great shots. Make sure you to the positions right though. I literally have a mirror I am testing in my living room. I do swings in it daily.

  6. My goal is to hit a minimum of 8 greens in regulation. I know if I do that, I usually score in the 70’s to low 80’s. I don’t worry about my score so much.
