It helps to keep the lead arm extended and a wider arc at address. So in a round about way, yes it would help through and past impact.

ChrisWould having the inside of my elbows incorrectly positioned facing each other explain why I would draw/hook the ball? It seems if I took my grip with the wrong elbow position , at impact my elbows would face out and the face would rotate. Does this seem right?

It could make you hit it anywhere. If you are hooking it without trying to hook it you have a grip problem. You need to watch the tips below:
