JosephPerezI turned 60 last weekend, embarrassed to say I’m probably 20 lbs overweight, and I find I can turn my hips just fine. Perhaps the “older” folk who are complaining that as they get older they can’t turn their hips are simply setting up to the ball in a position where they are are not properly balanced throughout the swing. This may be restricting their ability to turn. Perhaps a refresher on how to maintain proper balance during the swing is in order.

Paul WilsonJoseph,
I wish I was 20lbs overweight.
No the ones complaining are other teachers who think they cannot get people to turn their hips. What I am saying is they don’t know how or hav never tried because they are told to hit the ball with the arms.
Here are some balance tips:

RaymondCHASTELI’ m over 84 ,and yes ,I rotate my hips enough so my front cheek shows .All it takes , as Paul says ,is to REPEAT,REPEAT ,REPEAT the move every single day .As we get older ,we tend to get lazy with our body .By all means you should fight this tendency

Paul WilsonRaymond,
Exactly. You need a club sitting there though. Every night you will walk by it. Once I need you to pick it up and do 25 swings minimum. Such a small price to pay for better golf. It takes little effort.

taherakhandHi Paul
I am turning hips, but not fast enough. How should I start the hip turn? Should it be fastest at the beginning or slowly increasing in speed? When I watch your video, it looks like you are starting with a fast jerking move.
Please explain with a slow motion video.

Paul WilsonTaher,
You hit the top. You have the thought of your downswing trigger. You apply the downswing trigger immediately. Too many people are up there just whacking away at it and they are not even thinking of something in the lower to start the downswing. If it is not on your mind and you don’t know exact how you are going to trigger your swing why would you ever do it?
So choose a trigger:

I am firing the lower super quick. In not way am I hesitating as I am doing this. It it quick and immediate.

taherakhandHi PAUL
I am doing the drills and trying to turn off arms and turn lower body(hips). Not quite there yet, but getting more distance and mostly in fairway.
Problem: ball trajectory too high. Is it because I can not shift weight in downswing or something else? I am 75 years old and have been playing golf over 20 years.
i like your concept of teaching and it is improving my swing.
Please suggest how I should practice and play to enjoy golf.
Thanks a lot.

Paul WilsonTaher,
You are doing a chicken wing through impact which adds loft to you club. I have a bunch of chicken wing tips on the site.
Please go to the red navigation bar to the right you can type in the search box anything you are looking for and all tips will come up on that topic.
I would also be doing the roll over drill to get it hooking. If so you will be delfoting the club. Yes, it will be a pull hook at first. Once you can hook it consistently you then switch to firing the lower body to straighten it out.
