When I try to do this two things happen: topping the ball, or hitting it way left and very low where it feels like I am hitting it on the hosel. My diagnosis is that I’m trying to hit it with my arms. Calm me down and tell me to keep doing what I’m doing or what needs correcting.

Paul WilsonI would stop doing this, not every drill is for everybody. It sounds like you are just coming way over the top instead of turning and using your lower body. Get rid of the pulled shot and the topped shot first. If these are your 2 main misses in general. If its only with this drill then stop doing the drill. Slow down and cure then over the top shot first. Check out this tip:
