PaulSacchettiHi Paul,
I admit it is a struggle for me to get in the touch your head position. I got the knee together but not quite the touch your head. I’m working on it. I do, however, finally feel the true powerless arms. The distinct sensation I get is that the club weight is pulling my arms at the shoulder. Very odd. Getting this feeling thru impact was the toughest. I even had a lefty at the range next to me say he thought I had a nice swing and my wrists were loose. That’s a first. He looked like he was swinging a sledgehammer. Not long ago I was him. I feel I have made great progress but no change in my scores. Ihope that comes soon. I’ll have the best looking swing a 13 hc ever had.
Thanks for all your help. Paul

Paul WilsonPaul,
It sounds like you are close. I hope you are doing practice swings at home. Just act like you are hitting it at a mirror or window and watch for the club in the position I am suggesting (did you see Rory, Sergio and Fowler?).
Feel the arms fully stretch out past the ball and continue it around to the back of the head. I like the fact that people are noticing and commenting on your swing. This is a good sign. Once you are a little more used to it the scores should start coming down. For now, look for mind blowing shots. If you start to hit them you know you are close.

PaulSacchettiHi Paul,
You were correct. When I really loosened my arms the club ended up touching my head.
At the range, about 80% of my shots were very high, long and strait. They stayed in the air forever and the contact was pure. I think these are the amazing shots you talked about.
Thanks,
Paul

PaulKwonHi Paul
Just ignore me and don’t bother responding if I am talking rubbish but I think I was able to manage your touch the legs and club shaft across the back of the head parallel to the ears positions while I was coming across the top in my downswing. It seemed a matter of timing rather than positions. The positions happen later when coming across the top.
I am currently working on my release and had a good round yesterday. Working on the release seems to solve the distance, the slice and the coming across problem at the same time. Marvelous. With that I am just straight pulling without much side spin so it is an easy fix scoring wise.
Always enjoy your video lessons. you always have gem aside/throwaway comments that are very illuminating.

Paul WilsonPaul,
Sounds like you are coming along too. Once you get it consistently release life becomes a whole lot easier because you can stay focused on body rotation instead of both things. Just remember, your body affects direction. If you ire your legs your whole upper body should be hanging back to determine the path from the inside. If you cannot do this then manually tilt your body behind the ball as you hit the ball. Then work on perfect legs touching later.
Keep at it.

BruceJespersenMy swing has definitely improved listening to your video instructions and more importantly my score has dropped in general however even though I can go from point a to point B at times in my real swing my practice swings I seem to do perfectly but it’s when I step up to the plate is so hard to consistently perform and do what you asked so how do you step past that mental block of doing what has always been a bad habit for years

Paul WilsonBruce,
You too are still thinking ball. Forget the ball and think positions. Who cares where the ball is going? It is going to great once you do the positions. Did you not see Rory? That is the swing I teach. How about Adam Scott. Yes, that is the swing I teach too. Imagine if you had that swing how well you would play. The longer it takes you to think like this the longer it will take you to get it.
Make sure you are doing it perfectly in practice swings. As you do them imagine you are doing this very same move on the course. This is the whole point. If you are doing them right every time you are finished you will be feeling the legs touching and the club touching your head. So step on the first tee. Do numerous practice swings feeling this then step up and feel exactly what you just did in your practice swings. Right now, caring where the ball goes comes into the picture which is holding you back. Focus.
July 22, 2014
ThomasBruceI am having the same issues as Bruce Jespersen. Practice swing feels good and smooth but then I stand over the ball and it all goes to hell. Will try not caring where the balls goes.
Thanks Paul

Paul WilsonThomas,
If you are not doing the positions on the course something (a little white thing) is taking your mind off of them. No matter where the ball goes just do the positions. It will come together unbeleiveably fast if you do this.

If anyone doubts your release tips(rolling wrists)In the Open Championship all anyone had to do was watch the slo-mo of Rory McIlroy’s swing.I mean did he EVER ROLL THOSE WRISTS OVER I mean WOW If anyone ever doubted this is complete proof, and he finishes (on full swings)with the club parallel to ears(tho not on half and specialty shots) Keep those tips coming Paul

LenKoblenzTim,
You beat me to it. I was in awe of the slo-mo of Rory’s wrists and forearms. I was going to ask Paul if he was secretly teaching Rory and holding back on us. 🙂

Paul WilsonTim,
Exactly. This is the swing I teach. If you want it just do the positions. Glad you saw it.
July 21, 2014
KennethMoffatI, too, was watching McIlroy, and would swear that he graduated from Ignition Golf!
I feel great progress in my swing after a few months on this site. However, going on the course is tough. I’ve watched the ‘take it to the course’ video, but seem mentally trapped in swinging for the fences.
My short game is where I have improved most. I recently was able to beat the person who introduced me to golf a year ago on an executive course of par 3 holes. I have gone from 50+ to mid 30’s on this little course. (even had a few birdies, very exciting)
My short iron distances have improved a lot, and longer irons are coming along.
However, when I pick up a driver I’m hopeless.
July 22, 2014
Paul WilsonKenneth,
Exactly. I am not pulling this stuff out of thin air. You just have to see it.
You need to quit trying to be he hero. I can hit it by you all day down the middle with an easy little swing. If this is the case, then why are you trying to do something that will never work? I am not super human. If I can do something less that you and get a better result than you I am doing it a different way than you. This is why I am saying quit trying to be the hero. You will be in the future just not right now. Slow and easy swings 200 yards is the goal for right now. Do this and you will be taking the arms out of your swing. Once you get this you can then power it with your legs and hips. This is where I am feeling HUGE power when I hit the ball (it just doesn’t look like it). This is the concept. I am not playing paddy cake when I hit it. I am generating huge power but with the center core. The arms are just attached to the center so they create a whipping action.
I think you get the concept. Just try 1 round swinging easy. I would do this at night by yourself. Carry a few balls with you and swing easy on every tee shot. Hit a bad one and do it again. Then again and again until you hit it half decent. Then move to the next shot and do it again. You really can do it but you need to keep swinging easy until you are good at it.
I hope you are doing this drill:
DRILL: This Is The Best Drill You Should Be Doing Right Now: https://ignitiongolf.com/drill-three-quarter-distance/
Here is what I said to Bruce below:

johnhoyleGreetings Coach In my back swing /When i think all is right/ the steel shaft touches my head parallel to my ears and then same place on the follow through It feels ok but i want to know what you think
July 22, 2014
Paul WilsonJohn,
Why are you touching your head in the backswing? It should be touching just the follow through. The club in the backswing should be about a foot or so away from your neck.
I hope you doing this:

Just let me know if I have ready your comments wrong.

RaymondCHASTELPaul ,I watched intensely the BRITISH OPEN :on short shots ,the top players such as DUSTIN JOHNSON ( I really love his swing !),with mĂ©dium irons or wedges ,didn’t finish with the club shaft behind the ears ,but with the club mĂ©dium height in front of them .
What to say about this technique ?
Maybe coud be classifiied as punch shots !
July 25, 2014
Paul WilsonRaymond,
A lot of these shots are knock down shots, shorter shots, keeping it low or trying to get it to check. If the club is touching your head parallel to your ears you will be able to hit the same spot every time. How could you possibly hit this position eery time exactly the same?

RobertHawkinsHi Paul:
I revisited this tip because my follow-thru is correct except it is below ear-level. You said in the tip that’s ok if you can’t physically get into that position. I can, but its not happening naturally. What is the likely cause of a lower finish position? Distance from ball at set-up, shoulder angle during coil, etc.?
Thanks,
March 14, 2015
Paul WilsonRobert,
Typically it is buckling the arms through and past impact (slight chicken wing). If you are not doing this and the club is low then keep doing it low. It worked okay for Freddie Couples. If you want to fix it manually set it there in practice swings for a week or two then it will go there on its own and it will help fix the chicken wing.

RobertHawkinsPaul:
That makes sense and it would have taken me forever to figure it out. I’ll work on it, but if I have to “settle” for Fred Couples’ swing I can be a happy camper.
Thanks.
March 15, 2015
Paul WilsonRobert,
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
I am definitely trying to stop people from having to figure it out so I am glad this resonated with you. If only people would fix their follow through. I have proven it time and time again this is the most important position in the swing. Do my follow through plus grip and setup and you will hit it great.

StevenFarberPaul,
Still struggling with club going down back. I am getting to touch the head position ‘manually’ automatically, but when I see video I am still sending it down the back Johnny Miller style first.
Idk if I am posting too much, noticed you haven’t replied to my recent posts, and I get that you’re super busy, but would love some help on this! Very frustrated I can’t get this position, which I know is crucial to improving my consistency!
Thanks again for your tremendous guidance and instruction, you’re a lifesaver!

Paul WilsonSteven,
I try to answer every question. The only reason I wouldn’t have is that I overlooked it.
I need you to manually touch the head no matter what it takes. When people are not doing this they are not thinking about the position. If I was working on this I would hit the top. Then it would be thinking take the club and touch my head. If I had to do this at 1mph I would do it at 1mph. The point is to do it then speed it up.
I watch people working on this on a daily basis on the range. I tell them to touch and they whack the ball. 200 times later (of me saying it) I finally get them to do it. Others get it instantly. So those who take longer care about the shot. They hit the shot and forget about the position.
If the club is going down your back it is not releasing and you are most likely sliding through impact.
So start with getting the club to release. Watch this tip:
DRILL: Re-Hinge the Club to 90 Degrees: https://ignitiongolf.com/drill-rehinge-club-90-degrees/
From this point in the swing the club is already rehinged. A little more rotation and it will be on the back on the head.
Also:
Follow Through Mistakes – Club: https://ignitiongolf.com/follow-through-mistakes-club/
You need to do this nightly in a mirror and hold the club on the back of the head so it imprints in your mind that that is the ending point. Do it every night until you know no other way to do it. Yes, this is you manually touching it. With a ball if you have to do it at 1mph then do so. I just need you to forget the ball and touch the head. After you get it you can speed it up with body.

MichaelBarrettPaul,
In looking at my swing videos, my club is touching my head but it is on a downward angle about 20 degrees below parallel. Not down my back as in your exaggerated sample in your video but just angled downward. Is it likely that my left elbow and hand are just a bit too high? Any other potential causes?
I’m certain I need to do some more mirror work and holding the position. Perhaps just keeping doing this over and over and over until the club just goes to the correct position.
Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

Paul WilsonMike,
It is usually tightness that is not allowing it to go between the ears. You need to set it there directly and manually. Once you keep doing this it will go there on its own.
Yes, the mirror would be good. If it were me I would do 1,000 reps per night until it was fixed but that’s just me.
April 22, 2019
MichaelBarrettThanks Paul.
I will put in the work. Practice swings are part of my daily routine and I am seeing the payoff. I need to get my club parallel, so I will make that my new point of emphasis.
