    Sometimes when I am playing making a full swing my club hits my shoulder at the top of my swing – are my arms to relax during the swing?? arlin hill

      Arlin,

      Yes, the club should not be hitting your shoulder. You need to extend (but not lock) the lead arm at the top. Just think to yourself that the shaft is going to be away from your shoulder at you near the top. Go slow into the backswing so you can feel it. I would say at least 6″ from the shoulder should be fine. Do practice swings in a mirror watching it too.

  2. Interesting Drill ,Paul ,I’didn’t yet think of it ,I’ll try it right away .
    My own way is to loosen up completely the wrists and hands on the handle ,get up as high as possible to the top the backswing ,and let the club drop in the slot while at the same time I am turning my belly botton as fast as I can towards the target ;
    During the course of this extraordinary 2016 MASTERS which saw the unexpected collapse of JORDAN SPIETH and the consistent playing by the “ENGLISHMEN “DANY WILLETT ,PAUL CASEY ,LEE WESTWOOD ,and the DANE SOREN KJELDSEN (They are used to play on windy links courses ),there was quite some talk about your method by PHIL MICKELSON in The INTERNATIONAL NEW YORK TIMES ,swinging the club with the lower body and with the legs :they went back to ERNEST JONES and another gentleman I had not heared of before :SIR WALTER G.SIMPSON who wrote in 1887 the instruction book “The ART OF GOLF “Referring to BOBBY JONES ,PHIL MICKELSON said “You can play golf for a lifetime and injury free if you swing the club like BOBBY JONES did ”
    I saw LARRY MIZE ,the 1976 winner swinging ,exactly like you teach ,with the rotation of the lower body and the impetus of the legs and without any effort

      Raymond,

      This will definitely loosen up the lead arm. If it is too locked you will tighten the wrists too.

      You sure can play for a lifetime with my method. The tour has never seen so many players injured as they are now. Need to stand up so you don’t hurt your back. Oh well, someday they will get it.

  3. Superb simple idea well done !

  4. Thx Paul.

    Thx for all you do and it was great speaking with you.

      David,

      That’s great. Nice talking to you to. Glad you’re sticking around for another year. I appreciate it.

  5. GREAT DRILL!!
    This is one of the best tips for my ongoing struggle to relax my arms. I was 100% hitting with my arms but perhaps 10%. But that 10% was at the top of my back swing resulting in tight wrist and arms. I was struggling with how to relax the wrist and arms before starting the down swing. This drill solved it!
    Thanks Mike

      Mike,

      Glad you liked it. Getting a great response from this one so it must really help people feel the arms in the swing. You don’t have too far to go. Did you download the powerless arms chart I created. I spent all this time making it and all I got was crickets. Not one word about it.
