Hi Paul, thanks very much for the valuable lessons. Lately, my little finger on my right hand hurts when I overlap (Overlapping grip) between the index & middle finger of my right hand, to the extend now the skin on my little finger which is touching these fingers hardened (left side). Do you think it has something to do with a faulty grip? Tq.

      Zam,

Glad you like the lessons. Thanks for the feedback.

This could just be how your knuckles/fingers are curved or not curved. It could be that you are not positioning this finger properly. I wrap mine around the middle knuckle of the left hand.

It could also be that they are rubbing. Rubbing will occur with tight wrists. If your wrists are too tight and you hit a ball off-center it creates shock. This shock creates twisting of the club in your hands. My wrists are loose and I hit closer to the center so there is less shock. When I start out though my hands would be killing me. Once I got calluses they were fine.

Just make sure you double check the positioning of this pinky and keep working on loosening the wrists. Then you should be okay.

    Hi Paul:
Thanks for this timely tip. Actually I have a sore spot that has developed into a callus on the third finger of my right hand, the finger that rests against my left hand index finger using an overlapping grip. I follow your grip technique (left hand and right hand) to the letter. It’s right on the first knuckle (next to the finger nail). I’ve finally used a bandage to protect it. Is there something wrong with my grip.?? I’m hitting the ball reasonably well. By the way I’ve been at the range 3-4 days a week hitting at least 1-2 buckets each time. Maybe too much ?????

      Dave,

Tons of people get a sore finger there. You do so because you are just grabbing on to the club and pinching this skin.

What you should be doing is start with the right hand about a half inch higher up on the club then butt it down to the left hand. This way nothing is pinched. Using tape is fine. Remember Tiger. He always used tape. So do I if I am practicing a lot (rarely happens anymore).

Don’t forget you should be doing tons of practice swings. 2 large buckets should be taking you well over and hour if not 2 hours if you are doing practice swings.

Paul ,I play So much golf That I’ve developed THE proper callouses and THE FINGERS never get Sore.
M’y question is whether to favor a ” piggy back ” overlap or a positioning of THE right little FINGER between THE forefinger ( Index ) and Major of THE left hand ..
I’ve révèrted to THE ” piggyback ” which seems to give me more accuracy .

      Raymond,

I promote the overlap because it weakens the stronger right hand. Keep doing what every you do when doing this grip. Finger size varies between golfers. Some people cannot get the pinky to wedge in so they piggy back it. I am fine with this so long as there are no excess gaps and it looks right from the front view.
