  1. Funny isn’t it – we think we’re doing something, but we’re actually not and don’t believe it until we see a picture as proof . . .

And still how seductive it is to want to wail away with your arms at the top. Concentration looms so critically important here.

(no need to reply – no quesiton here)

  2. If you watch Dustin Johnson’s driver swing in slow motion, his right heel is about 4 inches off the ground when the club isn’t yet at his belt level on the downswing.

(I know he’s a freak of nature, but still, this goes to your point.)

      Anothy,

Yes, he drives that lower body hard. Has to cause the face is closed. If he didn’t he would hook it off the planet.

  3. Hi Paul,

Thanks for this tip. This is exactly my problem. I rotate to late like the examples you showed in your tip. Another problem I noted is that I rotate to much in my backswing. But you had a tip on that also some time ago. I just to start practice again.

    best regards

    Paul,

Does a longer pause at the top help with keeping you hands and arms behind your hips. I find this helpful at times. Is it bad to do the pause, is there a power loss when doing this.

      Roy,

You can certainly hesitate up there.

      Pause At Top: https://ignitiongolf.com/pause-top-backswing/

You can also do a 2 count going back and 1 count coming down. So 2 syllable word going back 1 syllable coming down. example Tiger Woods.

The pause is a change of direction. If the club is the last thing to stop and the last thing to get moving the other way it may appear to pause. This is not a problem at all.

Paul ,I fully agree with your demonstration video.I have another way of phrasing it .
At the same moment I pull the trigger of the downswing ,which is turning the belly button to the left and pushing hard from the right insole ,I “kick” energetically my left buttock-cheek backwards and to the left -45°-
When I am slow or just lazy at doing it ,my weight doesn’t move fast enough forwards and my ball flies as a push to the right .
    I have two questions :
    – I saw a Pro saying you should not play the 3 wood from the fairway (Too difficult to get the ball flying up !) ,and play a hybrid instead ,shorter shaft and easier to get the ball flying .I agree that it’s easier to do so ,but I do get a good flight and longer shot with the 3 wood off the fairway ,you have to be careful with the lie though ,if the ball is embedded in the grass ,the shot with the three wood is difficult to pull off .What’s your opinion on this Pro’s statement ?
    – I hear people saying that you should emulate the flat left wrist of DUSTIN JOHNSON in the backswing .I don’t ,I cup slightly my left wrist as you do .Is there an advantage to the “flat left wrist “position ?

      Raymond,

That pro obviously doesn’t know how to fix people topping 3 woods off the deck. That is the main problem. I guess he needs to watch my tip. If you can hit 3 wood. Hit 3 wood. It’s an important club that everyone needs to learn to hit.

Stop Topping Your Fairway Woods: https://ignitiongolf.com/stop-topping-fairway-woods/

Never ever ever have a flat wrist at the top. If it is flat you are manipulating it into a closed position. If you are in a 2 knuckle grip it would be slightly cupped the top. Again, whoever is saying this has no clue what they are talking about.

I did a tip on this here:

      Cupped or Flat: https://ignitiongolf.com/top-backswing-cupped-flat/

Paul,You are right .I played this morning m’y 3 Wood against THE 16° and 18° Hybrids I carry .Sure ,THE Hybrids were much easier to Play ,but neither OF them gave me THE same distance .THE main advantage oF THE Hybrids though was That I could make good contact with THE Ball in THE short Rough ,where I don’t dare Play THE 3 Wood .
Now ,when playing THE wedges ,I note That ZACH JOHNSON and STEVE STRICKER barely HINGE their wrists when playing THE wedges .I HINGE ” normally ” m’y wrists ,That is I hinge them Like all THE other irons,Hybrids ,Woods .
Is there an advantage not to HINGE THE wrists with THE wedges ,apart OF having less MOVING parts?

      Raymond,

You are comparing what a tour player does to what you do. They practice and have practice for hours over years. Keep in mind that Zach Johnson has a very strong grip. If his wrists were loose he would hook it off the planet. So for him tightening works. Sticker for some reason went to this tight locked up swing quite a few years ago now. He had it for a while then kind of disappeared. I just looked at this swing. Grip looks a little strong at setup as I can see his right thumb when looking straight on. He also has his hands a little too far ahead which gets you gripping on the side of the club. Then just as he takes it back he strengthens the grip a little more. I think he’s holding on because he has to get his hands ahead of the ball at impact. If not he too would hook it.

Why not just have one swing and change clubs. Seems easier to me.

Paul, Do we master this position before working on lag or is it necessary that lag is in place first.
I am about to start working on the downswing positions and a sequence of learning would be helpful . I am using the checkpoints .
Do I concentrate on each position in sequence or for example can I move from the top of the backswing to the release point in one movement . And where is lag in the sequence.
The checkpoints are brilliant- and keep me on track when learning a new position.

    Paul,

Does the weight shift occur before the hips begin to turn or is it simultaneous?

My number one and most frustrating problem is what you have demonstrated in this tip.My shoulders over take my hips in the downswing. I hAVE A PROBLEM GETTING OUT OF THE HIP FROM THE TOP MODE. rARELY ARE MY HIPS OPEN AT IMPACT. what should be my mindeset to delay the shoulders and fire my shoulders before the hips

    Paul,

I hit a bucket today and almost exclusively was trying the 2/3rds full swing drill. My bad hits were either straight left pulls or moderate slices right. I was concentrating on turning the lower body & focusing on relaxed arms. I never draw the ball.

This one swing thought is great. Forget the ball. Get those legs and hips moving. Swing through to touch your legs and head position. NO ONE else ever teaches this secret. Instead we hear strong grip, squat then spring up for power, etc etc all of which has horrid repercussions. Thanks again Paul. I love Ignition Golf!

      Glenn,

They are not going to move on their own so yes, get the hips moving. Yeah, I see what is out there. In no way would I every teach that stuff.

When trying to turn my legs and hips faster, I find that my arms often get trapped behind my body, forcing me to go more over the top to get to the ball. Can you discuss a bit how turning the lower body so early can still lead to an inside out path for good contact?

  12. I video tape my swing and many of my swings have the same problem. My turn is too late. I try to say to myself before backswing: Hips first. This tends to help, but still late way to many times. I work on this daily. My swing is similar to yours except for this late hip turn. I keep reviewing the tips so will continue to work on the turn. Any suggestion appreciated

  13. Hi Paul,
I’ve been taken some lessons with a few different PGA pro’s, and they ALL mentioned that I’m driving my hips too fast relative to my shoulders in the down swing. Do you have any tips that could help me on that?

    All the best Henrik

      Henrik,

You do that you will hit push and push fades. Did they fix it though. I can fix you in 5 mins. Watch these tips:

DRILL: Golf Swing Timing For More Distance: https://ignitiongolf.com/timing-more-distance/
Driving Hips Harder But Hook It First: https://ignitiongolf.com/driving-hips-hook-first/

Do it my way and you will kill it.

      • No I´m still struckling with it 🙁

My bad shots are pull-hooks, which should indicate that I`m comming over the top in the down swing. But I know for a fact that I`m starting the downswing with my lower body.

I rarly never see pushs or push fades.

I have had alot of focus on the grip, and I belive that it`s neutral or at least close to that.

I have a feeling that my upper body stops rotating or rotates too late during the down and/or follow-through swing.

Does this make any sense for you?

        • Henrik,

You may think you are starting with the lower body but you are also using your arms. You need to fire ONLY your lower body with powerless arms. If at that point you still come over the top you are probably lifting the right heel too much just like the person in the tips I just did. If so, you are leaning left in the downswing. Lean left and you will hit it left. If you were firing the lower body there is no way you would stop at impact.

So I want you to see exactly what I mean. Tee up a ball. With a 7 iron go to the top and tilt left in the downswing as you hit the ball. Then tilt way right on the next ball. If so, it will be crystal clear your left of right tilt of your body changes the path which changes the direction. Firing the lower body is like hitting the accelerator on a car. Hit the gas and you body goes back into the seat. Fire the legs and your body mass would angle back keeping you behind the ball as you hit the ball. This is what you need to stop coming over the top. I guarantee you are not doing this.

          So watch:

Lifting Back Heel Too Much: https://ignitiongolf.com/lifting-back-heel-much/

          Then do this:

Watch Back of The Golf Ball: https://ignitiongolf.com/watch-backside-golf-ball/
Another Way To Stay Behind It: https://ignitiongolf.com/another-way-to-stay-behind-it/

          And:

          Body Tilt: https://ignitiongolf.com/impact-body-tilt/

          Impact Head Behind Ball: https://ignitiongolf.com/impact-head/

Cures – Manually Tilt To Stop Pulling: https://ignitiongolf.com/manually-tilt-cure-pull/

Stop Fat Shots When Working On Moving Your Head: https://ignitiongolf.com/fat-shots-moving-your-head/

So sit there in a mirror every night and work in on tilting your whole body behind the ball as you hit the ball. The goal it to start every ball at or right of target. Then once you can do that you work on the release to get the right spin.

  14. Paul,

Great video here! An important corollary video for me is your “More Time for More Speed” video. Rather than speeding up my lower body, I get the hips first in the downswing by slowing down my backswing and transition so I have time to move my lower body first.

My backswing was always too fast for decades and I knew I needed to slow down but until I found you I didn’t know WHY I needed to slow down. So now, prior to starting my backswing, in my head I’m thinking “the farther you want to hit it, the slower you must take the club back.” It really works and gets me the hips first separation I need to hit the ball much further than I have all my life.

    Thanks much!
    Mike
