Paul ,I ‘m older than the 73 years old gentleman you mention in your video (I’m over 83 ,that’s the age of your Dad when he hit the ball 270 yards )
More than power (We lose more than 50% of our muscle mass as seniors ) ,we lose flexibilty and stamina = speed =nervous influx .You can overcome that by having a better and straighter swing, turn more back with your shoulders ,your left shoulder under your chin (Keep the chin high enough ) ,lift your club higher in the backswing ,use your wrists to whip the club ,have a better lag as you teach us (loose wrists ),strengthen your core with the ULTIMATE SWING TRAINER of MIKE BAUMANN ,and push like hell with your right instep when going in the throughswing .But most of all refine your short game:I spend a lot of time training my putting , my pitching/ chipping ,my green reading .
So I do enjoy playing quite much with honorable scores

      Raymond,

Yes, you have been doing great. You can do it. Get even looser and turn a little faster.

Best tip ever! I’m working hard on getting loose, not easy? Yesterday I went to the range
and just killed the golf ball! my last 2 driver swing speeds 115MPH and 111 respectively.
Using the same radar as you. Ball flight was slight draw and over the 250 yd marker.
Played 9 holes today and fell back into the muscle swing!!! Although I did hit some powerful shots. On a 490 Par 5 driver 3 wood pin high to the right. Next hole 390 driver 8 iron lipped out birdie and made par. I went birdie, par , par. Then hit a dead pull left on the next two drives. I’m pushing 71 years old and fit the mold of you description. When I get the loose feeling my swing is as good as it was 25 years ago. Just letting off steam!
Thanks for your help! Playing 18 in the morning. I’m swing a couple hundred swings a day trying to get loose. I get and then loose just as quick? I decided tonight to lower my expectation’s on how fast I’m trying to swing.

      Walt,

Glad you liked it. I get this person all of the time coming to me. I know what they are going to say before they even start talking.

Glad you are seeing results. Once you start hitting some longer shots we feel invincible so we start swinging harder and harder. If so, the arms creep in and you lose it. If so, slow back down. Loosen up and feel the legs and hips powering the swing.

Paul ,I’ve seen on the TV a Golf Pro training to swing standing on the front (Left) leg .He was trying to avoid putting too much weight on the rear leg when swinging .Does this drill make sense ? (I don’t see the need to do it myself :I do put some weight on the back leg when getting to the top ,but not that much .What I do is bringing a lot of weight forward when getting in the throughswing))

      Raymond,

The weight is shifting into the forward leg but what he is doing is excessive. Remember, your head would be way behind the ball as you hit the ball. All pros do this so to stay on this foot would not have the head behind the ball. why not just do the touch the legs position to get the weight more off the back foot? Way easier.

Paul, What helps me with loose wrists is to practice swing and let go with rt.. hand on downswing and follow through. I watched Jordan
Spieth do this. It seems to promote loose wrists and the release with rt. elbow held at side.Avoid chickenwing.
Thanks for all the great tips. Joe Vargas Age 78

      Joseph,

Glad you like the tips. Thanks.

Taking the right hand off definitely takes the right hand out of hitting. You can certainly do this to get used to it. Once you do then gently put the hand full on making sure you still do it. This is usually the problem for people. As soon as they put the hand on they start hitting again.

      Why not do this too:

Paul great tip. I am working on the body swing and have joined ignition golf as well. Baby steps. I’m working at it I am seeing progress and I will continue to work. My question is I’m one of those 70+ players single digit Hcp 7 I believe. That’s from senior tees. Probably 12+ from 6500 yd tees. I avg a little over 200 off the tee, however., when I get the body swing close to right it’s about 215-220. I am in good health and turn is around 75-80 degrees. Is 220 my max. Just asking your best guess. I don’t expect 270 or 280 but would love to get to 240-2(0. Thanks again for all your help. John

      John,

Thank you for joining. I appreciate it.

Yes, take it in steps. Then you will get it instead of getting confused.

To answer your question, I did a tip on it here:

How To Hit It 250 or Longer: https://ignitiongolf.com/how-to-hit-it-250/

At 82 my dad hit one 270 after reading The Body Swing book. It can be done. Just need to do it a little differently.

Paul, I love the site, the approach and the great tips. I am that 73 year-old golfer you mentioned and I’m committed to making my swing a body swing. However, I do have a big problem that I haven’t seen you comment on. The problem is that I have severe arthritis in both wrists (when I want to get down on all fours or try to do a pushup, I have to use my fists as the pain in the wrists is too severe to place my palms on the floor). Of course, this drastically limits my ability to do an effective hinge. Since I started using Ignition Golf, I have been trying to focus on keeping my wrists loose, but my hinge is tiny at best. Do you have any recommendations for an effective work-around or for some exercises to try?

      Frank,

You need to hinge to your maximum (whatever that is). I have taught many people over the year who had a broken wrist or a bone in their wrist that doesn’t allow them to hinge as much as I or others do. This is not a problem. What you have to do is hinge to your maximum. If you hinge to your maximum and I hinge to mine we are doing the same thing. It is when someone can hinge to let’s say 90 degrees and only goes to 70 they are not hinging to their maximum so that is something I am not doing.

So you need to hold on to the club and hinge to your maximum. If so, you are doing the hinge then make sure you are re-hinging on the other side. This takes loose wrists. So work it back and forth not worrying about getting more than you can get.
