Paul, is there a specific feeling you get when the club is released correctly?

I have been doing this & the stretch the arms out drill lately, since i am a chronic slicer. When i practice this and the club is released correctly, i feel the clubs weight wanting to finish the swing for me and strangely keeps me in balance throughout. It is an unusual feeling but feels right.

      David,

I have done it for many years so to me it is smooth as silk. When I get people to do it who have been looked up they say the feel the snapping I am talking about. You may feel the same. You may feel the crossing over or rolling of your hands. You need to do the roll over drill and as you are doing it feel what it feels like as you do it. Then without thinking about the ball think about applying this feeling to the shot.

I like that you are feeling the weight. This is good. If you are turning your arms off the club would start to feel heavy. So, I would say keep doing what you are doing. When you release it early you would be hooking it so this too would be telling you that you are doing it right. Now, keep doing it until its smooth. I would be doing it nightly at home as well just in practice swings. This is vital in your swing. Once you can hook it consistently then work on using your body to straighten it out.

  2. Paul ,I see some Golf Instructors telling you to have the Driver shaft ,left arm ,left hand in a straight line at address .You don’t do it ,nor do the Pro’s I Watch on the TV events .What’s the merit of doing so ?

      Raymond,

This was a Jack Nichlaus thing many years ago. The drivers nowadays have the hands behind the ball so I would not suggest doing this. Let the sole plate sit wherever it sits then grip around the club being careful not to move it. In thinking about it a lot of adjustable drivers these days get people putting their hands too far ahead of the face as the adjustment closes the face. This would be a band aid as well. I don’t like people adjusting them.

      • Paul ,I this also right with the irons (Not necessaire to put the shaft in alignment with the left arm ,handle pointing at left shoulder )?

          Raymond,

You can do it with any club but irons are easier. Do it with driver and irons should be a breeze.

  3. Paul ,If the grip on the handle is correct(Two knuckles of left hand showing) ,as you teach it ,it seems to me it’s not neccesary to “roll over “the right hand over the left hand .I don’t do it (At least i don’t feel I do it !Maybe I do !) and my ball flight is always sraight! .

      Raymond,

Almost everyone I see is way too tight in their wrists and do not release the club. So 99% of all people should be doing this drill until they have a smooth wrist release. This is where the power comes from in the swing. It is this arm/wrist unit which is connected to the coiling and uncoiling body.

      • Paul ,You are right in promoting the “Roll over “of the wrists .
I took up this pratice yesterday and measured what happened with the two SSRTT I align in a row ,one at impact position ,the second one 5 inches further .With the roll over ,the speed of the club past imapct is always faster than the speed at impact ,whilst without “roll over “it’s not always the case .Also as you show ,with the “roll over ” you can be more aggressive with the body turn .
So good instruction ,Paul ,thank you !

    Paul,
For my clarification, when practicing this rollover drill/swing at the range, do you tilt your body right (away) from the target or should you come over the top and your body tilting left?

    Thanks,
    Greg

      Greg,

No. You are not thinking body when you are doing this drill. This doesn’t mean you are just whacking away at it either. You are doing your normal swing the best you can but your main thought is to roll it and get it hooking. Once you can do this you stop thinking about rolling it and you switch to using the lower body (touch your legs position) to power the swing. If you start the uncoil before your arms move you will hit it dead straight because using your body will get the tilt you are after. If you think tilt you will not roll it. Get the roll first then work on body.
