  1. Paul,
Yup, great drill. I was doing the “My Favorite Drill” in my game today. Always decent shot when I did it over and over and over. Front nine we won’t mention, but I did do an easy 37 on back nine today. 🙂 Could have been a few shots lower if I would have been ‘throwing the ball’ on my short putts, IMHO. But, Happy with the progress. Went back to the range and was funny I was working on exactly the stretch the arms thing after the round, so today’s tip was great. Actually had chicken wings for lunch to remind me what not to do!

    • Kim,

Good back nine. When you blow up on the front and a good back you are thinking too much and trying too hard. Expectations were too high. Once you blew it you didn’t care so you lightened up on the back.

Glad you were working on this. I hope everyone else is too. This is vital.

Paul after the end point of this drill where do the wrist begin to turn over

  3. Paul,

When our arms are fully extended, should the clubface still be square or should it have begun to close? I like this tip very much, but it makes me think of the position of the clubface.

Thanks very much for all your thoughtful tips and exercises (and tests).

    Dave

    • David,

The face would be square to your body (breast bone. This is because your shoulders are rotated. It is also square to the target line briefly as the ball is release from the face (moment of separation).

Glad you like the tips. Thanks for the feedback. You are the first person who said the like the tests. Must be tricky for the others. Not a peep from everyone.

  4. Hi, am really confused now.

In this tip you clearly show the shoulders tilted and body and shoulders tilted through the swing.
In the previous tip you demonstrate your “helicopter” turn of the shoulders which seems to say that you are not supposed to tilt your shoulders.

I have watched both tips over and over and I cannot see what I am obviously missing.
Can I get some clarity on this

    John

  5. HI PAUL !!
TAKING A LESSON A LONG TIME AGO THE INSTRUCTOR ASKED ME TO TAKE A SWING AND STOP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER CONTACT…..QUITE POSSIBLY
TO ACHIEVE WHAT YOU ARE AFTER HERE…??? I REALLY DO NOT REMEMBER IF HE SAID WHY, HOWEVER I KNOW THE SHOTS WERE CRISPER ALONG THE WAY.
THANKS FOR THE INFO ON YOUR MAY GOLF CLINIC,PERHAPS NEXT TIME AROUND.
    BE WELL
    KEN

    • Ken,

Not sure why he said to do that. Might have been just a drill. Definitely don’t do this in reality.

Let me know if you can make it. Be great to work with you.

  6. Hi Paul I am working hard on the swing at home without a ball but I was tempted to hit one the other day and I hit the ball off the tee with the driver but it went to the left is this to do with the club face or am I turning too far left with my swing if you could help I would be delighted I am doing everything from takeaway up too backswing right then I uncoil how far back should my club be in relation to my lower body thanks

    • Sean,

This is great. You are releasing the club. The wrists affect the spin. You master this out of the gate and you will save yourself years of slicing it. Wrists affect the spin. Body affects the direction. So see the good in the shot. Wrist are working. Body is not starting the downswing. If your body starts first you will straighten it out.

Go to the Dashboard. FULL SWING > 1st SLIDE > BOTTOM RIGHT > 3 Videos > SPIN CONTACT AND DIRECTION these will show you how to fix you own swing.

  7. Paul ,There’s more in this drill than what people believe:extending the arms in the throughswing is the best way to gain distance while keeping the head backwards and the body tilted .
To check the “extended ” position of the arms ,isn ‘t advisable to use an impact bag placed two or three feet further than the ball position ?
It stops the clubhead at the “extended “position and you can then swing with full force and speeed ?
I pretty well know you hate impact bags ,but I voucher this suggestion nevertheless!
I use a training aid which trains for this ,called the SPEED BALL or XLR8R by JOHN NOVOSEL ,it shows you exactly if the quality of your impact past the ball is or isn’t good .
To do this drill well your arms, wrists and hands have to be very ,very relaxed …

    • Raymond,

Yes them impact bag should not be used at impact. Move it forward to the release point. I check out the Speed Ball. Interesting. No video on how to use it though. Can’t see it in action.

  8. Hey Paul,

Absolutely one of the most important parts of the golf swing. You will send your ball straighter and definitely farther, so far in fact that it will blow you away!

I have learned to incorporate “Wind from the top, unwind from the bottom, extend arms fully on the follow-thru” as my only swing thought when addressing the ball.
Keeping the left arm straight and connected on the backswing has also been very critical for consistency in my swing. Swing A to B ALL THE WAY THRU!!!

Hoped this has helped some of your beginning students. Kudos to your coaching and training. It has made my life on the golf course pure pleasure. Recommend highly the pitching and chipping DVDs to really get that score lower! Oh, last but not least, that Ultimate Swing Trainer by Mike Bauman is a “must have” for any golfer serious about improving his golf swing. It will put you in that release point AND
also deliver the feel that you need to expect, among a host of other goodies it provides.

    Thank you again my friend,

I’ve tried the throwing motion Hogan refers to in his description of release, and it seems to work well. Assuming I still swing the club with loose wrists and relaxed arms, what are drawbacks to using this throwing motion when attempting proper release?

      Silica,

This is a lot of right hand if you follow what Hogan was saying. I want no hands. Your wrists are a hinge. Just think about how a hinge would work. It would hinge … it would rehinge. There is no power in a hinge and a hinge repeats 100% of the time. So think about it and relate it to your hands and wrists.

Hi Paul, I love your style and that good Canadian inflection. Bobby Jones said you didn’t have rhythm if you didn’t swing through the ball not at it. Your drill is fantastic. All good players swing through the ball not at it and get lots of distance. It’s funny you mentioned the weight on a string. That’s Ernest Jones you know. Stay like a goose. Wayne

      Wayne,

The problem is you need to know exactly where to swing to. If you don’t know that you will be back to hitting the ball in 2 seconds. This is why I teach the follow through I teach. This is a precise point B to your swing. You need to think more of that then the ball. If so, you will swing through it consistently each time.

Hi Paul, Before I start doing this drill wrong… I wonder if the Touch The Knees drill is incorporated somewhat into the start of the downswing or would that encourage too much follow through? I ask because I don’t want to lose that feeling of starting the downswing with my body that I’ve been working on. I see that you do it pretty naturally in the video, but if I need to keep the 2 drills seperate I will. Thanks

How do you keep your weight on the leading leg if you are leaning back at the release point?

Hello Dale, thank you for your question.
It’s like hitting the accelerator on a car. Fire the lower the upper goes back. Throw some balls overhand out in front of you and you will see the action.
      Same thing.
      Happy New Year
