  1. Very good reminder ,Paul ,of the séparation ,alias called by JIM Mc LEAN ,THE ” X FACTOR “.
I constantly have in mind YOUR former instruction tip ,NOT TO MOVE THE BELT BUCKLE , which of course is not true ,as you said already ,but reminds you not to ” activate ” the hips !
You also have to remember not to “OVERROTATE ” ,it’s of nô use ,as those YALE PROFESSORS showed in their study ,due to the law of ” DIMINISHING RETURNS “.
Now ,it’ s all up to the SMOOTH ACCELERATION of the hips forwards !

Hi Paul, In your first “helicopter” drill in the tip is the feeling (tension) you feel in your lower and upper body similar to what you feel at the top of the backswing?
In this drill how do you stabilise your lower body? Do you brace the lower body before starting to move the shoulders or do you apply the bracing tension/foot forces gradually as you rotate your shoulders? Do you do the se thing in the backswing?
Can you describe the forces your feet apply to the ground when you brace your lower body?

If you can answer these questions I am sure it would help me and others to correctly coil.

      Ted,

You should be feeling a stretch in the left lat if you coil properly. This drill is showing separation between the two. The first part of it you really don’t feel that much torque. As you go back farther you would feel it. This tightness tells you that you are coiled up properly.

To stabilize the lower I am imagining my belt buckle is pointing forward as I rotate. You can also think your lower body is in concrete. Anything to slow it down is good.

I am feeling the weight into my right instep and the foot is gripping the ground so it holds the whole swing together. If you lose this foot by rolling to the outside this will lose the torque. I got this by just doing a ton of practice swings every night.

  3. This has to do with how to feel your body tilt at impact. The question is do you move your hips laterally first, of course not too far, before you dramatically start rotating. My main problem is I rotate without getting enough of the weight to the left side. Is this because I’m not shifting enough to the left before I start my rotation? So do I think of it as a one and two movement or 1-2 movement if that makes sense.
