If you feel the stretch on the takeaway how does that fit with powerless arms Sue

  2. Great tip. I can feel the stretch pretty well. My biggest problem is the transition from the stretch to the downswing, where occasionally I come over the top and yank the club… but that is a different problem altogether.

I am trying to incorporate some of these drills as I hit into a net. Trying to work on one each per day. There is no doubt these drills help !! One drill I was doing yesterday is the long arms drill {hit the chair}. I still struggle with a bit of arm collapse {left wrist and arm and only in my real swing, practice swing of course is easy!} It’s just a bit– But I want that full extension after impact and the long arm follow through. One thing I was thinking of is a “heavy club head” type drill ?? Does that make sense ? Seems to me the heavier I try to swing the club head the more I can feel the PULL/Extension. To do this you need loose wrist and kind of dead arms. Any thoughts ?

      Keith,

I like the net at home but be careful not to neglect doing practice swings.

Not sure if you are talking about using a heavy swing as you swing which I totally don’t agree with as this will make your clubs feel light which is the opposite to how they should feel.

Making the club feel heavy as you swing it is the right thought.

Here are other tips on widening the arc. They may help you get a better idea of how to do it and the feelings associated with it.

It is a Letting Go Experience: https://ignitiongolf.com/letting-go-experience/

I would be swinging slow and easy (with a ball) and at least getting them to stretch out. Keep in mind you will most likely hit some fat shots because you are putting a wider arc in your current swing. This is a good flaw. Don’t avoid it. Just keep doing it slow and easy until you get used to the feeling.

Once you can do it slow then gradually speed it up a notch. Get used to that then go up another notch and you should be at top speed with full extension.

Also, I just remembered this one:

Paul— i just watched the video of make the club feel heavy. WOW– spot on !! everyone should watch this twice ! Along with the other videos and drills this is a must watch !! I can tell people that I just did this thought and Holy cow did I feel like i was swinging slow and easy and my ball went as far as ever and very straight !!! Amazing little thought we all forget about.
On a side note– I agree, no extra heavy club stuff… i try to do perfect swings with a driver shaft with no club head.
Thank you for all the timely responses, you must love your job !!!

      Conroy,

Glad you got the feeling. Heavy!

I love making people better. I never want anyone to go through what I sent through.

      Keith,

Sorry, called you Conroy. You name is backwards. Maybe that’s why I teach the follow through first. LOL.

I agree with Keith, I try to do one video practice a day if not more. The key to my new swing is that coil tension on my left side of my back.
My best shots occur when I start this way. Then firing with my hips with loose arms and a nice hinging and unhinging of my wrist and my new practice of releasing towards “the chair” is really working.
Yesterday I found an old box in the garage where I place the flaps open. I stretch my club to my extension point trying to just barely touch the tip flap of the box.
Then I do a full swing. That sound of hitting the flap top corner lets me know I fully released the club through the swing.

Hi Paul, I have a question about what follows the actual transition point at the top of the swing. I understand that by using a trigger, such as the right leg turning or left leg straightening the downswing begins. But, are the arms in sync with the right leg movement? Is there a feeling that the downswing is working WITH that right leg movement? Thanks.

  7. Paul,
I understand the stretch in the front lat. Do you have advice on the abdominals at the top? I can tighten them really hard, which shortens my back swing, or tighten them less hard and rotate a little more.

Or I can ignore altogether! It just seems like those muscles are responsible for the rotation in both directions. When the ball is struck should the abs be 10/10, 7/10 or something else?
    Thanks much.
    Jim

This is a muscle group that I have not really paid much attention to into the golf swing. But it would make sense that if you tighten muscles you would restrict movement. You want to get a good ratio between your shoulder turn, hip turn and your knees. I would focus on coiling to the correct ratio and being relaxed.

  8. Paul,
I am trying to understand the tension at the top of the backswing in an effortless golf swing.
Normally when I create tension at the top of my swing I have a hard time transitioning to a smooth follow thru.

    Thanks,
    Bob
