  1. Paul – My golf is on hold as spinal stenosis has returned and I am back to walking and exercises. We think that the way I was working on the leg touching put some strain on my hips and spine. However I walked 2 miles this morning and and couldn’t walk 10 yards a week ago.

However it gives me time to ask you about the release – I have a tendency to flip where the left wrist breaks down and sometimes hold it through iimpact and get no release. I know about loose wrists and am supple enough to have that work and the left wrist doesn’t always break but with a faster swing with the driver it is not properly releasing. Any suggestion you have I would appreciate it. Jim OMaalley

    • James,

Not sure why you wouldn’t be doing the touch the legs position properly as you have already done this before:

      It’s Like A Throwing Motion: https://ignitiongolf.com/like-throwing-motion/

So make sure you work in it like this in the future.

Not sure exactly what you mean. You feel a flip coming on then hold it off? If so your wrists would be locked. Here is the tip on flipping:

No release would also not get you to the touch the head position. So why not work on the touch the lead position instead of the release. This is what I keep saying. I am fixing your follow through to fix impact.

  2. Paul ,I neither draw nor fade the ball :all my shots are dead straight .I don’t see why I should change my way..
Even when I should draw the ball (When behind a tree for example ),I don’t ,I take a recovery shot and play the next shot straight .
I don’t want to tinker with my swing which is now fairly well grooved ,repetitive and consistent
When I watch the pro’s playing ,they do the same ,they hit the shot straight ,except with the driver ,where most of them hit with a slight “natural ” draw (Phil MICKELSON ,JASON DAY ,RORY Mc ILROY ,HENRIK STENSON ,BUBBA WATSON, etc..)
It seems to me “working the ball ” was done mostly by the ancient Pro’s (SEVE BALLESTROS was the king of moving the ball both ways ):it was easier for them to do so with the soft “balata “balls and the “persimmon “clubs .
I am of opinion we should not make the game more complicated than needed .
The shortest route from one point to another is the straight line…

    • Raymond,

No one said you should change. I said I want you to hit it straight. If it falls one way or the other that’s fine too.

Funny you just mentioned some very poor drivers as far a accuracy is concerned:

Here is their placement in the top 200 players.

stenson 7 (wasn’t even listed before last week)
      mccilroy 79
      mickelson 156
      watson 164
      day 180

Maybe they should fade it or hit it straight.

  3. Interesting tip Paul.
I have been following you for a couple of years now and I have had some success and better golf. Scores have not changed a lot but I am having more fun. I am 69 and have had serious back problems. Your swing actually make my back feel better.
I have a natural small draw on my swing and in the past have had problems with pulls and pull hooks which I now know how to correct thanks to your teaching. I also know that if I happen to slide I could push the shot. Lately (last 4 games) I have developed a slice which I have never had before ( and loss of distance). I have a very neutral grip, maybe too much. Your videos on slicing have not help me as this just causes a hard low pull. I am likely doing something minor to cause this slice. Tried slight change in my grip; closing the face of the club a little; getting a little closer to the ball works 50% of the time, but nothing is really working well. This slice business is all very new to me. I want to get back to my normal shot which was either straight or a slight draw and some 30 yards further than what I doing now. Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Thanks again Paul.

    • Gerry,

Glad you are doing well. Glad you are not in pain. If you are in pain doing my swing you are doing it wrong. In no way should it hurt your body.

I’m troubled by your scores not significantly lowering. This would tell me that you are either not playing as much as you should be and/or not precise enough with your swing positions.

You are not understanding how I am curing the slice. Of course you would hit pulls and pull hooks. This is the whole point of doing the roll over drill. Once you can do that you stop purposely trying to roll it. You then switch your thought to the legs and hips to start the downwing. If you body moves first in the downswing you will straighten it right out. So anytime you are hitting the pull/pull hook you are starting the arms first but the benefit is your wrists are working and you are releasing the club. You are just on the wrong direction.

Too weak of a grip is certainly an issue too especially if you are natural drawer of the ball. I you draw it and you weaken the grip you will hit pushes and push fades because you are still sliding in the downswing. Cure the slide by turning more and you would hit it straight.

So you need to first fix the grip. Next, do the roll over drill. Remember this is a drill NOT reality. Once you can hook about 10 in a row then switch the thought to body rotation. Watch your ball. If you still pull/pull hook you need to start the body sooner. If you push/push fade you are driving the body too hard.
