Very interesting video ,Paul ,raising quite a number OF questions .You come back to the old motto ” when you CAN put ,put .When you CAN chip ,chip .When you çan pitch ,pitch ”
When I’ m not on the Green ,and FAR AWAY FROM THE PIN” ( Most important !) I Usually chip,.With the chip ,I have better chances to,hole in one .
Now ,in Match Play ,when I have the ” s hivers ” ,i put ( my worst put is better than my worst chip ).
M’y RULE is the same as yours ,double the distance between the ball and the fringe .
Now ,if the ” fringe ” is wet or is High grass ,never put ,CHIP!

      Raymond,

So many people will resort to putting first then chipping. When they putt they usually mess it up so they would have been better to chip. Hope the members start chipping. It takes a little time to get used to it but when you do it works a lot better.

I really appreciate the commons sense you apply to golf. Combining commons sense, the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle and powerless arms has improved my game exponentially. Thanks, Paul!

      Henry,

Glad you like it. A lot of it is understanding. If you don’t get it why would you do it? If I can help people understand why and give them a simple way to do it they will actually do it.

  3. I like these short game tips. My hardest shot around the green is when your in thick fluffy grass maybe 10 feet off the green. It seems very difficult to judge how the ball will come out. I leave em short and I go way past the hole as well. Any tips on theses shots??

    • To GLENNWISSE. Paul RUNYAN ,the short game Genius ,has covered extensively how to overcome these difficult chips in his book “THE SHORTER WAY TO LOWER SCORES “.It’s mostly a matter of how to “pinch” more or less the ball and how much you “open “or not the clubface .But it does take considerable training to be succesfull even when you fully understand the technique

    • Glenn,

You need to learn this shot:

One Way To Hit From Long Rough – Pop Shot: https://ignitiongolf.com/chipping-pop-shot/

I had a tip on long fluffy rough. Can’t seem ti find it but you would need to grip down the amount the ball is sitting up. Then you won’ go under it. Give that a try too plus the shot above. Practice … practice … practice.

  4. MATT KUCHAR is a great adept of putting from off the green ,and he is succesfull at it .When you go that way as you show in his very useful video ,,you may also remember what RAYMOND FLOYD ,who was also a succesfull chipper and putter ,said of this “off the green putting “::THINK OF IT AS A LOFTED PUT “,meaning you have to endeavor to “LIFT ” the ball off the short grass by placing he ball more on the left foot ,beyond the big left toe .

  5. If you are one foot or two feet off the green and you are chipping hat rule do you follow to select a club?

If you are 3 ft off the green how far are you trying to chip the ball in the air before it rolls the rest of the way. Would it be 5yards in the air and 5 yards roll to a pin 10 yards away .

You always want to land the ball 1 yard onto the green. If you are 3′ off of the green then you are flying the ball 6′.
