Paul ,I was taught another wayto get into your stance :Walk to the ball with THE club in your right hand ,position your right foot and take aim with THE clubhead towards a Mark in front of the ball, then position your left foot ,finally find THE width of THE stance that suits you .
    Is this method incorrect ?
I am Still erring in finding THE correct width of stance:I measured THE distance to THE outside of my shoulders ,marked this distance on an alignment stick ,position THE inside of my heels to this distance ,only to get THE impression this stance is too wide to allow an easy rotation on THE front leg .So I have reduced THE stance width to get “comfortable “.
What do you advise me to do?

      Raymond,

I don’t see the difference. If there is not a major difference then it should be okay. Just follow the steps and check everything.

You can check the width of stance 2 ways:

      1. Easy Way to Check Width of Stance: https://ignitiongolf.com/easy-check-width-stance/

      2. With irons your legs would be touching and even in the follow through. With are driver the right foot is dropped back 1 ball width because the stance is 1 ball wider.

I have not set up with the feet together before but I of course did as you said and now my stance is the same very time. One more thing not to here to think about…I’m getting there Paul!

      Henry,

Exactly. It is a long checklist that you must go through to eliminate the possibility of a bad shot. Why hit a bad shot from the wrong width of stance etc. if you can check it before you swing?

I believe because we, or at least I am not a professional playing to earn my living, I need the constant reminders of the basics. How easy it is to revert to “human nature” and go back to my old habits. But little by little I am trying to follow your way of learning to swing a golf club. Some days it all falls into place, and then there are the days when I just seem to loose it. I expect I will be one of your students for as long as I play the game. It have heard it said that Golf was used to name this game because all the other four letter words were taken. I am now retired and golf is something I enjoy most days. Not all day, but a couple of hours most days.

      Peter,

I realized that people had busy lives many years ago when I first started teaching. This is one of the reasons I want people doing lots of practice swings looking for the feedback in the positions I teach. As you do the positions and check them you develop a great swing without hitting that many balls. A great swing hits great shots. So long into the future keep doing these practice swings and keep the thought that as you do them you are building a great swing. It is not about hitting a ton of balls. It is about how you are moving your body. The balls will be hit once you get the movement. So start now and you are on your way. Start next week and you are a week behind.

Paul/Pete, does this set up technique apply to all shots including putting?
