NO RESPONSE REQUIRED. This is solely anecdotal…

I have a practice of hitting hundreds of imaginary balls in my bedroom. This practice may soon be curtailed as soon as S.W.M.B.O. (she who must be obeyed) sees the not so imaginary holes in the ceiling.

caveat: Not factual, but for grins.

Paul: What tips do you have for chipping out of deeper Bermuda grass near the green? I am having difficulty with this. You will see Jim Siebold this week in your 3 day clinic who is a golfing buddy of mine. Hope you are well….enjoy the tips…Byron

Paul, I really like the thought from your email introducing the Winter Time Practice video: “…solely focus on making the necessary swing changes without being distracted by hitting golf balls.” Treating the ball as a “distraction” is an awesome idea. It’s another way of thinking to help shift focus to swinging from point A to point B with powerless arms. Hope you’ll do a tip expanding on “Don’t be distracted by the Ball” sometime soon. Thank you.

      Dari,

This has been my technique for many years. I have proven t works many times over. Unfortunately, the great majority of people will not stop hitting golf balls. I am okay with people playing and working on their short game but if you really want a great swing fast take the ball out of the picture. No ball means you can focus on positions. Then you can master the positions. I’m glad you get it and want to do it. I think I have another tip on this coming in the near future. I will keep revisiting this because is vital in creating a great swing. Keep at it.

Hey Paul. This is somewhat related. As you know I have a fairly good practice area at home and use it daily almost excessively. Today I went out to the course and it was pure mayhem! All by myself, extra balls and all. Trying to remain loose, gearing back etc. After the round, I came home and started driving into the barrier. The balls hit dead center, were solid hits and from all visible appearance, the swing felt really good. Without the feedback of actual ball flight over longer distances, I am wondering if I am deluding myself about the seemingly solid hits into a barrier from 18 feet.. I truly get it about swinging at 50%, hip rotation, loose wrists, but like most others, it just does not seem to be coming together on the course. I hope I am not simply ingraining bad swings. Sometimes I feel as though I was better off not knowing the stuff I have been watching online because I recall my old swing was starting to come around just about the time I began watching videos. (not necessarily yours, but various). Its probably mental. Guess I should start playing Dave’s videos.

      James,

Here is where you are going wrong … you said “After the round, I came home and started driving into the barrier.” This means you are just hitting golf balls. If so, you just keep engraining your old habits. Stop hitting so many balls. Do 3 practice swings for every ball. When you d the practice swings you are looking for the feedback of the positions I teach. The positions are all on this site. You just have to search grip, set up, follow through and backswing. Then you know how I want you to go from point A (top of backswing) to point B (follow through).

I like the fact that you are loosening up and swinging easy. This is great but without a great swing you will never change. So you need to work on grip, setup and follow through first. Get this and your swing will start taking shape. As I said, you look for the feedback I teach associated with each position. Master them with the slow easy swing. I would also be swinging while watching myself in a mirror or reflection in a window. This way you can see if in fact you are doing the exact positions. A great swing will hit great shots so start building a great swing now.

Next, when you go to play at this early stage you should be looking for a few good shots. This is telling you what is coming in the future once you are better at it. There is no way on earth you are going to instantly switch to hitting every shot great. Just stick to the plan and keep playing. It will come if you keep working on it.

Roger that…..I found the way to navigate the site in logical sequence i.e. Intermediate members etc gives me a great overview that I can follow step by step. The thought point A to point B, takes my mind completely off the ball, I dont even notice impact until the ball is well on its way as I am focused in getting to the correct follow through position. I also noted that in my practice area, I can look at my reflection in the patio door glass even though I am not faced towards the target and must just do practice swings which in itself is probably a very good thing ;> ) You are also right about looking for a “few good shots”. Even though my last time out was disastrous, I did have some excellent iron shots and was able to par each of the par 3’s and on one of the par 4’s my seven iron had much more altitude and I was able to execute some pretty darn good shots over some tall trees.
(no response required, as you have given me plenty to work on).

      James,

This is perfect. You are starting to see that the ball is not Point B. This is a huge breakthrough. Keep practicing and watching your positioning. The more perfect you do the positions, them more perfect you will hit your shots.

      Keep at it.

Those long winter months with no golf are a thing of the past for me. When I retired 10 years ago I decided to move to some place where I could play golf 12 months of the year. I found nirvana in Green Valley, Arizona. It is about 20 miles south of Tucson and at an elevation of 3000 feet. Summers are cooler than the Phoenix area, the traffic on the highways is never a problem, golfing is affordable and we only have 7 golf courses within 5 miles. I still do practice swings and mix it up with practice on the range and play rounds of golf sometimes 5-7 days per week. Life is good!!!!!

      Peter,

I keep hearing more and more good things about that area and worse things about the Scottsdale area. Glad you found it. I might have to check it out one of these days.
