I find that if I set the ball on the tee so that the ball equator is at the top of the driver, I sky a lot of drives. My interpretation of this result is that I was a little careless and set it too high by a smidgen. I do not hover the club before hitting my drives. I set it on the deck.
Are you really trying to make actual contact with half the ball above the club face? I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want to hit the ball in the center of the driver face as I would think that that would get the most distance. Isn’t it a good goal to use the trampoline effect of the face of a modern metal driver and wouldn’t that be in the dead center of the face? (FYI: I have a Ping G15, 10.5 degree loft in my case)
Or are there some other factors involved here that escape me.

      Carl,

The best place to hit the ball is above center on the face. Keep in mind the head is compressing the grass when you lay it on the ground. When it swings it is off the ground. That alone will get it slightly above center on the face. If your club swinging up in any way at the ball (not to say your club or pros do this) it would move the ball closer to the center.

If you are skying your drives your head is ahead of the ball as you hit it. If your head is behind the ball it is impossible to sky it.

You need to watch this tip:

      Skying: https://ignitiongolf.com/cure-skying/

So stop trying to hit the center of the face. This is a hitting thought. You need to be thinking swing not hitting the ball. Immediately start working on keeping your head behind the ball as you hit the ball. You will see you will never sky it again if you go this.

Greetings Coach Just an update this day On sunday played with two other fellows at a club I have only played once. For some unknown reason I went through the motions of my setup routine but didn’t really think about “just the motions” I played with great embarrassment,it was awful. I topped, hit fat,my swing was way too fast, and any other mistake that could be made I made. The next day I went by myself to see if there was any hope. I made an effort to think of each setup step really think about them .Loose grip, feet together,a target two or three feet out, everything I could think of and it made all the difference. I must be a SLOW learner. THANKS PAUL

      John,

Playing with others got you thinking about hitting great shots and playing well. You need to be thinking of the movement and forget the ball. Don’t keep score and watch for some good shots. This is a totally different way to swing than what you are used to. You will want to go back to your old swing unless you think differently. You need swing go slow, swing nice and easy and do the positions on the course. Once you get a few rounds under your belt you speed up your leg drive for more power. That ball makes you want to do things you shouldn’t be doing. You have to be determined to make the switch to a new swing that does not have you hitting it with the arms. Keep doing the practice swings at home and master the positions. When you play look for the feedback of doing these positions. Hit it, hold it and check it. Do perfect practice swings before every shot so the move in your mind. Then replicate this move with the ball. Watch your ball and it will tell you what you are doing right or wrong.

Excellent reminder ,Paul ,OF the basics about teeing for the driver .This applies also to the three or FIVE Wood off the TEE ,but not to the irons or hybrids where you TEE fairly low ,just not to scrape the turf when swinging .
That being established ,I never ,never try to aim a spécific point OF the Clubhead at the ball .
I just swing And That be it .When it’s flush ,you feel it ,when it’s off center you feel it Even more .
Question : is there an optimum Time for the tempo OF the swing ( Tempo= Start OF the back swing to contact OF the Clubhead with the ball )?

      Raymond,

Optimal is different for every person. Mine is 1.2 seconds when using the SSR. Other people are different. Fast, excited people are quicker. I take it back by coiling my body. If you coil back fast it will be faster. I think around 1 second would be ideal.

  6. Thanks Paul, As a beginner(3 years playing at request of my grandson)
I eliminated my topping by going to extra long tees!
Now I know that that was because I threw my hips forward.
Now learning your coiling and uncoiling method I’m hitting my drives
drives longer (for a senior?) Now you have left me with a lot of 3″+
tees. I plan to spend the north eastern winter carving them down!

      Richard,

That’s funny and great. Glad you got rid of topping. This is the biggest problem when you start playing golf. Now that you got rid of these shots you should get to a whole new level. I try to let beginners know that they need to get the ball airborne first. Once in the air we can straighten it out. Can’t do much if the ball isn’t airborne.

  7. Paul ,
This lesson is quite to the point.
I sligthly changed the way I adress the ball with the driver .
Instead of teeing inside the left instep I tee just in front of the left big toe ,with the ball a wee bit higher than it was before with the equator of the ball aligned with top of clubface .
I’m careful not to slide .
    Mine is a rotary swing
The flight of he ball is higher ,giving me more carry and distance.
I should mention I push a lot with the right foot when swinging .,I kick the right knee in towards the ball..
    Is that accepable ?

    • Raymond,

Everything sounds good. Just be careful with the ball off the toe if you start pulling it that may be the cause as it could be swinging left due to it being a little farther forward.

  8. I understand tee height and placement inside my heel but land marking from, the distance from my toes to the tee is always a guess either I heel it or toe it or get a good drive when I get a good drive I have to guess how far to reach on my tee ball on my next drive Is there a simple way to do it Thanks Garrett

  9. THANKS for your very expert advice Garrett
