you always talk about circular motion, which is great but when you demonstrate it to the camera you usually are standing up straight and turning your hips. this is a little misleading as when you swing you are really in a good golf posture and turning your hips and not standing up straight. its a little confusing visually because when i try to fire my hips and lower body i am not standing up straight, rather i am hunched over the ball and thinking of firing the hips kind of under and around more. hope this made sense and thanks for the help. it is working great and i will try this tip today……..tomorrow!

      Doug,

The concept is this, I want you in your setup position and tilted throughout the whole swing. I want you to be thinking TURN to start the downswing because the SHIFT will happen on its own if you get to my touching of the legs position (ending on the tip of your back big toe). I don’t see why would would even be thinking about standing up and coming out of the shot. You should be thinking from the top of the backing to do one of the downswing triggers and get to this ending point.

If you are coming out of it you are trying to hit it too hard. So watch the ball until you have hit it. This means delaying the reaction to watch for the shot. If you are watching where the ball was after you hit it there is now way you will be coming out of it. Remember that into the follow through you should be watching the ball fly through the air through tilted eyes. Again, there is now way you can stand up and hit this position.

Paul any tips or videos on how to hit the long irons everything else seen to be working even the driver but the long irons re fading on me they star straight at target then halfway there fades like 30 yds thanks ****

      Paul Wilson

      Carlos,

I think I answered this the other day. Here you go:

With long irons you need to swing slower. This gives them more time to square. I am going to do a tip on this. Thanks for reminding me.

  4. By chance I relooked at this tip. It really is one of your best! I was reviewing my swing stats with that 3Bays GSA toolge and found that no matter how I tried to increase my hip rotation the swing speed recorded was hardly getting above about 90mph. Applying this tip really changed the rotation for the better! Thanks Arthur

    • Arthur,

That’s great news! When I did it was amazing so I never stopped doing it. Once you recognize its importance and see shots fly way farther than your normal shots its hard not to think that this move is responsible for it. I know you will not want to stop doing it either. As you do, you will start to hit the longest shots of your life.

  5. Paul ,This Video really opened my eyes :I have read all BEN HOGAN ‘s books and books written on BEN HOGAN ,including his POWER GOLF you refer to :I was always amazed by THE photos of BEN HOGAN in his through swing :h

  6. Marvelous d

    • Raymond,

I highly doubt Hogan was 136 mph. Tiger Woods isn’t even that fast. You get there by turning your body fast and loose wrists.

Hi Paul Like the feeling of pushing of with right toe to start, one issue i am having is, when i use the throwing ball motion, weight taransfer is great and i end up balanced on tip of right toe, when i hit a ball , at the finish still have some weight on back toe and toe is bent not straight up on tip. in you videos you always end on tip evenwith a forward lean. does this forward lean ensure more complete wt transfer. when you finish your swing is the feeling on your right toe the same light feeling you have when you throw a ball. when i throw a ball i feel very little wt on rt toe at finish is this the feeling i should have in rt toe at followthrough.

    • September 11, 2013

      Paul Wilson

      Barry,

If you are not getting to this full finish you are not totally powering the swing with the lower body or there are balance issues. As you know most people hit with their arms. In doing so they are not using the lower body as much as they should be. So you need to keep doing the throwing motion and keep practicing ending up in this exact position. Yes, you should feel minimal weight on this back foot at the completion of the swing. You are balancing on the very tip of the toe.

  8. September 12, 2013

    barrybower

Hi Paul Getting less weight on back foot makes big difference in consistancy, less weight i feel on back toe at finish better the shot, will keep working on this ,i think this is one small point over looked by alot, never realize how little weight should be on back toe at finish untill i tried to relate throwing motion feeling to golf swing finish. its hard to get that light feeling in toe if you swing too much with arms like i was doing, less arms easier to get that light feeling on back toe. Thanks, hitting ball great now, after only 1 practise session, that light feeling on toe at finish makes all the diff in world.i found doing half or slightly less than half swings at first made it easier to get that light feeling sensation in toe, the gradually work towards a full swing. A swing tip combo on keeping head behind ball emphasizing that really light feeling on tip of toe at finish would help a lot of people.

    • September 13, 2013

      Paul Wilson

      Barry,

Glad you are working on it and getting the feeling. This can be tricky for people so just keep at it. Definitely turn off the arms and feel the lower body powering the swing.

    barrybower

Hi Paul Sometimes when i push off with right toe to start downswing when i am in the finish position i feel like my upper body is ahead of my lower body and am off balance some, still finishing on back toe, but upper body leaning forward to much compared to lower body. not sure if you understand what i am explaining. My question is , is this forward lean at finish from not enough lowerbody ,or still to much arms and overtop move or both. my miss now has moved from push slice to slight pulls with draw or hooks , most shots acceptable. alittle more leg drive normally straightens out the hook and pulls but not sure whats causing the too forward weight feeling sometimes at finish

    • September 25, 2013

      Paul Wilson

      Barry,

If you are pushing from the right toe and ending up forward you are shifting too much weight too soon. It is a TURN not a SHIFT. You are pushing from the toe in a circular motion not a forward motion. In doing so the weight will shift on its own by the time you are done causing you to end on the very tip of your right toe.

The pulls are telling you that you are still using your arms in the downswing. You need to keep them turned off and start the downswing with the lower body. Just feel the tuning and shift should happen on its own.

Greetings, Paul! I just joined Ignition Golf last week, and have been doing drills you have on releasing the club, and loosening the wrists. My major flaw has been the left arm “Chicken Wing”, and it continually haunts me. I’ve gotten down to a 9.4 handicap, and have diminished back up to a 12.3. I’m fortunate to live on a 5 acre horse property where I hit balls in the paddocks here in Florida all year around. I’m a member at “Majestic Oaks” in Brooksville, and really love to compete. I’ve spent countless hours practicing drills to cure my “Chicken Wing”, but don’t seem to get rid of it? Anything you advise would be greatly appreciated. I’m 6’2″ packing 285 pounds, and will be 55 in January. Thanks

    • October 27, 2013

      Paul Wilson

      John,

If you are chicken winging it your arms are not being allowed to stretch out fully. So you need to stretch them out. This can be done by manually forcing them out or feeling the weight of the club stretch them out.

I have 8 drills on this site to cure a chicken wing (type in chicken wing in the search box above). To cure the chicken wing, I like getting people elbow together into the follow through. If you separate your elbows through impact why would they be together at the end of the swing. So fix the end and you will be fixing impact (I bet you never tried that).

      Here you go:

Paul.I love this video you posted already a long Time ago ,and I look it up often.
Now ,I have two questions :
    – why is it you don’t teach to ” hit down on the ball ” :I know you say That this happens naturally as the swing properly MADE bottoms out beyond the ball, but taking aim several inches beyond the ball seems to help me .
-adopting a slightly closed stance with the right foot pulled back one inch or So ,as shown by BEN HOGAN in his book enables a better Turn back and ,in m’y own case ,increases Clubhead speed measured on the Swing Speed Radar, with however a drawback which is pivoting through enough to keep the ball flying straight ,if not it goes right .I know you don’t like this too much. What do you advise me to do?

    • December 7, 2014

      Paul Wilson

      Raymond,

If you are hitting your arms will buckle. When they buckle they get shorter so you will end up not taking a divot. Everyone is already trying to hit down. How many of these people actually take a divot? Why would I tell someone to do something that they are already doing and is not working?

Harder you hit the tighter you get, the more you manipulate the face, the more loft you add.

You take a divot due to your body tilting in the downswing and the width of the arc maintained. If you hit the arc gets narrower not wider. If you hit you are not working on your body so you don’t get the tilt.

When I get people to loose their arms they take a divot and make pure contact so why would I not keep telling people to not hit down?

If you are thinking beyond the ball your arms are stretching out which is what you need to do to widen the arc. So this is a better thought than hitting down.

I advise a square stance and hit the ball with your legs and hips NOT your hands and arms. Do the drills and constantly work on it. I guarantee you are not doing these things to the best of your ability. Your wrists could be looser and you could be turning faster. It is unbelievably simple. So make it simple.

You keep referencing all these theories and stuff instead of seeing it in it’s most simple form. Think about Iron Byron. Imagine you are the machine. To make it hit the all farther they turn up the speed of the motor (your legs) the arm is still powerless and the hinge (your wrists) is still loose. It is not rocket science.

It certainly worked for me Saturday — one over on back, broke 80. Speaking of POWER GOLF: is it worth re-reading. I have it somewhere, a small-sized paperback boxed up somewhere. I recall reading it and then being told that Hogan changed his mind about everything in it (hooking issues), and that I should focus on the 5 fundamentals book (my father had cut these out of Sports Illustrated and them put them in a notebook binder).

      Jule,

That’s great news. I love it when people break 80. Good things to come.

Hey paul this is the tip that took my game to the next step
Before this I was 250 260 carry after altering my trigger to this I now have 280 290 carry never ever thought I could hit the ball that far amazes me every time I pull the driver out and my friends can’t get over it ha ha guess being tall finally has it’s advantage.
Have gotten my handicap down to 13 never thought I could get there lost three shots in a month broke 80 for the first time just loving it
Now to work on the short game
    Can’t thank u enough.

      David,

Good stuff. I love hearing it. I think you are getting close. Yes, I would most definitely be working on the short game. With that much distance this is really going to become a huge part of your scoring.

This move is so powerfull that it should be regarded as a “golf secret revealed” . I was stuggeling with the downswing triggers for some days and i came to the conclution that the left foot rolling was the best way for me to get everything happening in the correct sequence , the “power push” came after grooving it a bit and i just could not believe the clubhead speed it generated . Absolutely fantastic stuff 😀

      Even,

Unfortunately, it is not my secret. I found it after reading Hogan’s first book Power Golf page 24 and 62 where he says for more power he pushed from the inside the right foot. After reading this and trying it myself I had my first light bulb moment and never stopped doing it.

I’m so glad you tried it and got the results. Now you too, will never stop doing it.

  15. Paul ,I looked up this video once more and the comments herein (Mine and others )
    ,several years old.
This holds true ,and I have improved thanks to it.
Does it help to pull the left leg forwards (The left knee)at the same time or just before pushing hard from the right instep?

    • Raymond,

It is a turn and a shift at the same time. There is not one move then the other. It is fast and smooth.

Okay Paul, now one more question. What would say about Mioss Thompson raising her right foot of the ground and I have seen other girls do that.

      December 18, 2017

      Paul Wilson

      John,

I think you mean her left foot through impact. In her case it looks like she is snapping the legs almost too much and it is rotated at the target. There is no way you could do this without moving the foot. I don’t really like it but it works. Is it making her hit a few bad shots here and there? Not sure. I would keep it planted but if it made her lose power I would have to re-think it. I don’t like the locking of the right leg either. Almost looks like she jumps.

I have seen players do this too. It’s just a way they are getting power. You never know if they have every worked on it. Maybe they have and they hit it worse. Could be a body mass thing too. Seems to happen in lighter players.

          Mauri,

Oh yes, the ladies definitely look like they are barely swinging yet they hit it longer than most golfers. Most guys I talk to love watching them swing then the swing like a maniac themselves. Funny how that works. Well, we all know that is not the way to do it.

Paul, love the opening frame of this video tip!! Position of your right elbow, straight lead arm and lag is the “picture worth a thousand words”.
Having been the “over the top & slide” hitter since begin playing at the late age of 35, reinventing my swing to the PWG method is an “unlearn, relearn” greatly difficult task as you and many have noted. Having played 18 yesterday, it became apparent that it’s really difficult to “touch the knees” while coming over the top. However, on a half dozen shots, having completed the coil, back swing, hinge and bringing the right elbow down close to my right side, goodness, touching the knees was much easier and the ball went long and straight! No doubt all this is tied up with my inability to stay behind the ball in the uncoil. This video tip is really, really great for helping cure my malady and those similarly afflicted. Thanks so much.

      Dan,

Glad you liked this one. It was a great day when I got power.

For the over the top just watch the back of the ball as you hit the ball. This is how I did it many years ago. If you keep doing it it becomes a habit super fast then you just stop thinking about it.

Glad you got the feeling of it. If tucking the right elbow coming down does it then keep doing it. I am okay with anything that get the person to do it so long as it stays withing the parameters.

I keep telling everyone to do the practice swings at home daily. This is the easiest way to get this stuff. No ball no distraction. You keep looking for the feedback and feeling of the position then when you play you try to hit the position and get the feedback. Too many people do out to play and try to hit good shots and get distance. This is not how to do it. No matter where the ball goes you need to do it. If you have to swing 1mph then do so. As soon as you get it slow you can go faster.

Keep on doing what you were doing. Plus, watch the back of the ball. Get the staying behind it so you don’t have to keep working on this aspect of the swing. Then you can move on.

Warmer weather enabled 18 yesterday – “powerless arms” shots are winning!! Yes, higher percentage of these shots with each new round of golf. Results are straight shots that are nicely longer and EFFORTLESS!!

Since joining the Paul Wilson golf academy class of 2017 early last November, I’m certain that I’ve not missed a day doing swing drills in the great room. Believe a mistake I’ve made, however, with “Paul’s #1” drill, is swinging too aggressively, which of course, was igniting the arms. Upon taking this thought to the course recently with your above “keep eyes on the ball” until you hear the club head hit the ball, major consistency improvements and effortless swings were achieved. Really, really seems that the ball is going so much more “true” and long the less my arms are contributing to the “swing”…..

Still in search, however, of my “trigger” – seems like of the three, different day, different trigger is needed, or perhaps, during the same round. Also, great need as you’ve noted, “slow down” and execute the trigger precisely each time – before attempting to speed up. Thanks Paul!!

      Dan,

That’s great. I love hearing about improvement and about the person doing consistent practice swings. I keep telling everyone to do them but I’m never sure they are.

Glad you figured you were adding the arms when doing the off the ground swings. Yes, off the ground but legs only. Watch this one:

DRILL: How To Really Increase Power: https://ignitiongolf.com/how-to-really-increase-power/

Keep looking for the trigger that works for you. This is vital.

  19. Update:
Another warm day found me on the course for 18 yesterday. One thing that’s interesting is that if I don’t get to the range for warm up, I’m comfortable with going to the first tee and preparing by doing the #1 drill for a couple minutes – it works!
OK, results of the round yesterday:
Higher percentage of full swing shots successfully used “effortless arms” technique. Believe when this doesn’t happen the root cause is my “flat” back swing as in past.
Observation: One can’t NOT believe in your approach, Paul, if time is put in on the drills – even a little each day helps. Before your lessons, my buddies were 30 yards longer than me (we’re all early 70s old), but, yesterday, I was 10-30 yards longer then them and “IN THE MIDDLE”!!!
I would provide more data, however, I’m due for my morning 5 minutes of the #1 drill!!

    • Dan,

That’s great. You buddies are probably scratching their heads. Too funny.

My favorite drill is a good one. I do this when I go the first tee without warming up too. This gets you feel the legs and keeps the arms relaxed. Glad you are doing it.

      Keep at it.

    Paul,

I had mentioned in another tip that I was an old slider so using the straightening of the left leg as a swing trigger really helped my hip rotation. That said, I think your right toe drive method might give me more speed and a more complete hip turn.

My question here is: If we try driving much harder like you do in this video might we also experience and expect pushes and push fades until we implement some rollover hooking first to better match the release timing with some newfound hip speed?

      Paul Wilson

      Michael,

Yes you would push it because you are only speeding up leg drive. If so the release would be late because it is not timed for a faster rotational speed of your body. So you need to hook it first then drive the lower harder.
