  1. Hi Paul

Some times I find myself touching the head with the rubber grip, what am I doing wrong when I am in this position?

  2. I cannot chip always stop on the ball however when I practice it works for me but never when on the course

  3. Excellent recap of most of your teaching,Paul. This pupil of yours has put his finger just on the right spot .
Now you have to do it also when playing “for real “on the golf course ,not just at the practice range
The best way to check this is to observe each time your finish position and hold it a few seconds :are your touching your head ,are you touching your legs ,have you moved your weight onto your left leg ,are your hips past the target?

    • Raymond,

I tell people to hold it over and over again and still they don’t do it. Just thought this would explain the benefit of actually doing it.

  4. Hi Paul,
Can you do a video on punch shots with hybrids? Can I play this shot with a 4 hybrid (22 degrees)? Any adjustments to ball position, etc?
I find this shot to be very consistent and I like to play it from the tee and from fairway, light rough:)

I am sure he can, but what the hell does this have to do with “touching your head”?

      • Dr,

I get people to post questions under any tip. This way I get notified. Should really post them under the right ones but not a problem for me.

    • Stian,

I never do or have done this shot unless I was trying to keep it under a tree. If so just do the punch/knock down shot as I show here:

      Knock Down Shot: https://ignitiongolf.com/shot-knock-down/

      It should work just fine.

      • Ok thanks. So even if its consistent and easy to hit and control I should only play this into wind/under a tree?

        • Stian,

Right. Or when you feel you need to hit the shot. I wouldn’t be doing it on every shot. Every see a tour player play this way?

GREETINGS COACH You were correct,i was closing my stance.I made the stance adjustment and went to far to the left of the target and started to hit left. Today I adjusted a little more right with good results. There is not much room for error from closed ,open and square is there? THANKS COACH

    • John,

Glad you saw it. You need to be square to know if you are hitting well or hitting it poorly. If you know you are hitting it poorly you can fix it.

There is not much room for error because 1 inch off in your stance is yards off in the distance. Need to put down the alignment stick every time you practice. If you always practice from square you will be square when you play.

  7. In recent interviews Padraig Harrington has said that he tells golfers to work on one main thing: holding a balanced finish. He obviously means touching the legs and touching the head at the finish of the golf swing while holding it in balance. Sound familiar? Thanks for all your help, my golf swing has improved tremendously since joining this site and it’s nice to see that the best golfers in the world are doing the exact things that you are urging us to do.

    • Richard,

Great thought. Pretty rare when anyone talks about the follow through. Good thing they aren’t all talking about it. If so, I may be out of a job.

    • Richard,

Glad you have improved. I love hearing it.

    Ben

Jason Day has generally always finished in the position you talk about but I’ve noticed recently the shaft is finishing lower, more at the level of his neck and too vertical. He can hardly hit a fairway at the moment – has been hooking his 3 wood.

    • Ben,

I know he was in the position. I didn’t realize it was falling apart. I will look for it this weekend. Problem is, he has no clue about this position as I am the only one who knows and teaches it.

    Paul,

I greatly appreciate this tip and the golfer’s email. I have also have been guilty of not placing much emphasis on this position. I was thinking too hard about touching my knees and stopped there. I went to the range today with the only thought which was to get to the club to touch the head position.

After about an hour of practice, I was able to get to point B most of the time. My trigger and position 2 were my only swing thoughts. ( Before I got there I promised myself I would take 4 practice swings before each shot.) The improvement also came with emphasis on my trigger and proper movement of my core. My shots were straight , longer, and most of all I was consistently hitting good shots.

Thanks again for emphasizing this part of the sawing

    Roy

    • Roy,

Glad you saw this tip. Everything I teach is equally important. I keep saying it’s about building a great swing.

I like the practice swings before each shot. That is a great way to do it.

Keep working on it. As you do, the club will finish there every time.

  10. Makes perfect sense. The best shots I hit is those where I master the follow through in perfect balance touching the head and actually being able to hold it. I need to pay more attention to this as my overall swing thought and block out the ball. Thanks!

    • Stian,

Yes. The follow through is the most important position. You cannot get there if you do it wrong at impact.

    Hi Paul,
Have been trying to fine tune my finishing position and rotation with a bit of experimenting…I’ll take a very slow practice swing to my finish position touch head touch knees. From there I focus on the feeling in my hands and elbows in the finish checking the parallel line to my eyes and also the perpendicular line to my alignment stick (with the club). I then slowly reverse out of it to a setup position, check my ball position, and make a swing. In these swings I feel more connected A to B and i hit the finish position I practiced. What I notice is that by doing so my grip and thus my arms are in a different position at the setup based on the position and feel i can find rehearsing the finish. Does this make sense? Any thoughts/ concerns? Thanks, Craig

      Craig,

No real concerns. This is like you are previewing the follow through which is great. I keep telling everyone this is the position to focus on. By doing this you will have it in your mind so you can replicate it.
