Paul, it appears to me that each of Hogan and Kuchar (especially the latter) move their heads toward the ball during the backswing. Could that be a counterbalancing move required by the flatter plane?

      David,

Yes, this is what I see all of the time. Most everyone I have ever seen doing a flat backswing moves their head forward. This is one of the reasons I don’t like or teach this swing. If your head goes forward and you don’t bring it back you will most likely shank it (which is what peole doing this swing complain of all of the time). Interesting you made this correlation.

    Paul.

Please explain laid off back swing.

Is a laid off back swing endemic to a flat swing?

      Michael,

For a right hander it would be when your club is not pointing down the line at the top. It would be pointing left of target as I showed in the videos of their swings.

This can happen from an outside takeaway, less than full shoulder turn, flat swing, not knowing where the club should be at the top, bowing the lead wrist, collapsing the lead arm too much and so on. So there are many reasons for it. It’s not specific to a flat swing.

    Paul,
I feel like my back swing is to upright, in the past when I have tried to flatten I found myself taking the club back to far on the inside at the beginning of my back swing. Any thought on that.
