Paul, when i try turning my hips faster i end up with the clubface open resulting in a high slice. Does that just fall back to get the ball hooking first drill? Any other drills to help with the upper body timing?

      David,

This is telling you that you have not rolled your wrists enough plus when you try to get more power body you are doing it at top speed. You need to roll it and get it hooking first. Then and only then do you add some more lower body. Watch your ball. If you still pull hook it that’s great. This means you took your mind off of rolling it and you still rolled it. All you need to do it start your lower body a little sooner and you will hit it dead straight. I have done this a million times. There is no other drill needed. Fix the spin (wrists) then fix the direction (body).

    Paul,

Sounds like something all except the very top golfers should work on. Since many of us do not have the proper area to practice this
“separated” swing with a club in hand the many times and frequencies to change our old habit, is there any value to do the proper
separated swing with no club in hand. This way we can do this drill in the office, at hgome in the bedroom, etc.

      Walter,

All top golfers are already doing this. All golfers who learned as an adult need to work on this because they are not doing this at all. You do not need an area larger than the space to swing a club to work on this. You hold the club in the air. You start the lower first then feel the club follow. You do this nightly and get used to it. Then you apply it to the ball with a teed up 7 iron.

You can do this with no club if you want too. Any movement of hips first in the downswing will help as this is a coordinated movement that takes constant and consistent practice.

This is my biggest bad habit to fix.
The good thing is Ive only been hitting with my arms my first year playing but the past 8 to 10 months with your good video coaching, my hips and knees knees are firing first and I’m really feeling that sensation with my wrists cracking the whip instead of my arms hitting like a hammer.
Thanks Paul for “drilling” this into my head!

      John,

Perfect. Glad we got you as a rookie. Hitting with arms for 30 years is tough to fix. Glad you are getting the whipping feeling. Keep feeling this. You will never want the hammer feeling once you get used to this new feeling.

  5. Hi Paul

I’m sure that I speak for many when I say that I your appreciate individual answers to our questions.

I guess that faster hip rotation/ touch knees would come from strengthening the key muscles involved in hip rotation. Can you recommend specific exercises from the Flexibility part of your website that would help develop this speed – it would help to make the website more seamless.

    Thank you.

    • Gordon,

      Strengthening them will definitely help.

To find the associated tips just go the red navigation bar. To the far right type in hips and all tips with that in the title will come up. Then scroll down the page and look for Jeremy’s picture. Go to the next page and so on. I did this and his start to show up. This will give you some great exercises to do.

Here are the 2 I want you to do:

    Real helpful Paul.

Even watching baseball, I now find myself watching the hip movement of Major League batters. A small player like Houston’s Jose Altuve (officially 5’ 6” 165 lb, but probably even smaller than that) gets his powerful swing by driving his hip incredibly fast!

      Mark,

Exactly and yet there are people out there telling everyone out there it is all about the arms. Crazy.

Paul. I’m 66 and I learned the bump my hips forward first. This is incredibly hard to un learn. I have some success but then it creeps back in. So frustrating. What’s the best way to rid my self of this fault. I’m guessing thousands of your favorite drill?? I’ve done that drill a lot but mentally when that ball is down there, I revert.

  8. Very helpful and interesting analysises of these very fine players .
    Two more things to note ;
-They turn their shoulders very much :90° and more .
-They lift their hands and arms very high above their shoulders ..
I ‘ve searched for an instrument to measure the rotational speed of the hips ,
    I haven’t found any .
To improve the speed rotation ,you have to be able to measure it .
Do you know any of such measuring devices ?
I know I move faster the hips as I ‘ve gained consderable distance ,but except for the distance ,I don’t kow how my hips perform !

      Raymond,

Not sure how to measure hips either. Maybe a stick on the hips then track distance traveled versus time then calculate MPH.

Somax says the pros upper body rotates around 2.4 mph.

There was an app where you put it in our pocket and it measured the hip speed. I had it not sure what it was called though.

  9. Hi, Paul. Thank you for your lesson today.

    a. Out of approximately 50 balls in the bucket, 5 or 6 went right. I can see pulls, draws and straight shots more often. Granted this is in our city’s indoor dome (still freezing cold here). I’m beginning to hear the sound of compression. Mind you, I’ve focused on technique by using only my 7 iron. I also do the rollover drill frequently.

Today’s video reinforces the need to bring my belt buckle back to the ball just as the club returns and is parallel to the ground. Your three examples were perfect. I see the separation. Is this what the HipStart will help us accomplish?

    b. Back at the beginning of the new year, you mentioned possible new video lesson strategies i.e. sending in clips to have them analyzed. Any progress on that?

    Take care.

      Anthony,

Glad you are working on it. You need all balls going straight or pull/pull hooking. Just do the roll over every night at home until it’s mastered. This way you can clearly focus on lower body to power the swing. This really doesn’t take long but you need to roll it early and get used to this feeling.

The HipStart gets your hips moving so yes this would be helping with separation.

I am working on something for analysis. You will not be sending video. It’s better and easier. It’s almost in the testing phase. Once tested we will let everyone know about it. No one had it or is doing it. I had a built. Exciting!

  10. Nice video… I was also impressed by the amount of lag in their swings. You might want to consider doing a “lesson” on lag using the same videos. Thanks.

      Donald,

Yes, this way a good tip. I will do more on lag in the future. Good idea. Thanks.

    Paul,
Can’t begin to tell you how helpful your teaching has been, whether the book or the tips.
In one of your relatively recent tips, you showed how many (most?) people actually do the turn-hip-lift-heel move AFTER impact. Video shows me that I am turning my hips, barely beginning to lift my right heel, then, on impact, the whole process is interrupted and picks up again indeed after impact. Can’t control it: I sort of raise, legs stiffen and foot stays flat or returns to flat. Without a ball, of course, I do it perfectly. I have been trying very hard to do it right in all kinds of different ways (closing my eyes, full swing or shortened backswing, with irons or woods, etc) all to no avail. Any miracle drill in your bag?
    Thanks,
    Claude F

I really like this tip. I have struggled with how to speed up my hip turn to gain distance. My good drives are getting better. The problem is I know I go back to swinging with my arms to gain distance.. Visualizing these swigs when I get to my backswing does help. My question is that I keep working on various parts of my swing. Can I and how could I send you a video of my swing to get a better idea of the most important thing I should I be working on. Appreciate your help.

  13. does firing your hips faster also help with hitting it straighter..

Great video. However, you did not mention that their backs are still at the target in the transition as the hips and legs rotate. The lag seems to depend on holding that angle in the left wrist, right?
