    Hi Paul

I have been doing exactly what you say in this tip and it has helped a lot. But once in a while, with a fairway wood, since I follow your powerless arms method, my hips turn faster while my arms are still up. The result is a serious push. Looking at both Faly and Lefty, their hips do not seem to move until their arms in the downswing reach almost 9 O’clock.

How do I avoid this push?

      David,

If you hips are outpacing your arms too much you are driving them too hard. You are saying this is with a fairway wood. When do you hit fairway woods? When you are trying to get close to the green on a par 5 and when you mess up a tee shot and need to get it to the green making up for your mistake. Both of these hard you trying to hit it too hard. Just realize this when you are in this situation and swing smoothly not too hard. Also, watch this tip so you know what to do before you hit this type of shot in the future.

I don’t know what video of their swings you are looking at but both of these players have their hips moving to start the downswing. I am looking at the original full swing video I was using.

    Paul,
What do you think of the pronounced movement of Mickelson’s forward knee?

    Thanks,
    Len

      Len,

Mickelson has always had a wild swing. This is why he is inconsistent with longer clubs. I can’t believe he never fixed this years ago. He is starting to now and the results are paying off as he is getting more consistent but if he would have done this years ago he would have been even better.
