    I am half way there

I am 67 years of age
The tips throwing the ball make me toutch the knees , Thjis is magic

but when i do a golf swing with a club
    no way..

    • Robert,

So do it long after you hit the shot. You just need to at least do it. If you just quit you are not doing it at all. Also, just do it slow not caring about where your balls goes. When people can’t do something they are trying to hit great shots. Forget the ball. Just swing slowly thinking “take my back leg and physically touch the forward leg” looking for the pressure of them touching. You need this feedback to tell you that you are doing it right. So no matter where the ball goes or how long it takes you, get them touching.

Bought the dvd over the weekend. Hit balls in backyard over the weekend. Tried the swing on the course today. Happy to see that I could end up at the finish point of touching the head and right foot ending at the toe. Did not check the touching the knee as I forgot about it trying to do the other things. Did not get any distance with a slight slice at times. I am a 14 or 15 handicapper who has mostly hit with my arms. Lucky to get 200 years on a drive and am 69 years old. Hit a 7 iron 130 yrds. Question: Is the trigger for the downswing the idea of touching the knee or turning the hips or turning the belt buckle towards the target? What is the best thought for starting the downswing? If I start with my shoulders and keep the club cocked, it helps me get to the hitting area without swinging my arms down.

      Pat,

Glad you are working on it. Make sure the positions are precise as I hear from people all of the time they are doing something when really, they are not. So watch my positions and copy them exactly.

Don’t worry about the fade. There is a whole cure your slice section in the book and videos. You can get to that later. Just stick with grip, setup and follow through until you are used to it.

You need to choose your trigger. In the book (page 136) I have all of the triggers listed as well as in the videos in the positions video at the end. You can spring from the instep of the back foot, knee ahead of the ball, belt buckle, hips, or straightening the forward leg. Try them all and get used to them.

At this point in working on it you really shouldn’t even be thinking about the downswing trigger. You should just be trying to touch the legs hitting the ending point. In other words, don’t move too fast through the lessons. I teach a very specific way. Stick to the plan and you will get it … fast.

Also, once you get it then go to the distance section for more power.

Do you touch the legs with the distance wedge game?30 to 100 yard shots?

  5. Hi Paul – new member to the site. So far I have watched a lot of videos and agree with everything you’re teaching. Last night I played 9 and hit mostly great shots. However, this morning I watched a setup video that made me believe i might be too bent over. As such, I spent the entire day using your “taller” setup position, and then I played 9 tonight. Needless to say, I didn’t have one good shot. Everything was short and thin. Looking at some of the pros on the Internet, it appears many of them have their shoulders a bit ahead of their knees. That’s what I did prior to today. Do you think it’s bad to keep that? The new setup seems to give me way too level of shoulders.

On a separate note, my back is also hurting for the first time. Could this be that I was trying to force the downswing trigger too hard? I’m trying to really get on it since you said you can’t stress how fast that move should be. Is that really necessary for me. I can still get my legs touching on the follow through without really forcing the trigger. Should I just go with that until I feel more comfortable with the overall swing? Thanks, Jim

      Jim,

Glad to have you on board. I appreciate the support.

I go through this all the time when I get a new student. When I get them up I tell them they will top it or hit it thin for about 10mins. This is because you are on a totally different angle than you are used to. Just be careful to not be up too tall. To get the shoulders level or too level you would have to stand up going back because even in the taller setup you are still tilted. So I would re-check the setup in a mirror. I like the middle of the shoulders, knee, front of laces relationship. So set up with the mirror off of your side and back up until the edge of the mirror splits your shoulder. Then check the knee and laces. You can also put tape down the mirror.

I also tell people this will take 3 practice sessions to not feel so uncomfortable so double check it and keep doing it for a little longer. If you are still having trouble then let me know. I might have you send a picture of it.

In no way should your back be hurting doing my swing. I tell people that if it is you are doing it wrong. This could be that you were creating too much of an inward arch (over doing it) when doing the taller set up. You could be uncoiling too fast. Not getting off the back foot or sliding too much laterally doing a reverse C at the follow through.

I get the feeling you are forcing the setup. I would also slow down until you master this stuff. Then decide if you want a little more. If so, you go a little faster. Get used to it then do it again if necessary. Be careful. I am the guy people come to as their last resort to relive their pain. Once they follow me they never have pain and are able to keep playing.
