In this tip I read a quote from Ernie Els and go over the key points he describes about his golf swing and how he swings. As you know Ernie has that slow, easy looking golf swing and I teach that slow, easy looking golf swing. You couldn’t get a better match. If you want to learn how to stop using your arms to hit the ball and develop that slow, easy swing take it from Ernie and me and put these things into practice.

    G’day Paul,
A few years back I told our club Pro I wanted to swing like Ernie, he thought that was a good idea. I went through a period when I was saying to myself “How slow can you go”, the results were good. Then the gremlin of more length off the tee came along. Yes, I turned into a hitter and, the more I tried the worse it got. Well I found you and found my way again (with lapses). Yesterday, one of my playing partners commented how effortless my swing looked. I guess it must be working, my drives were keeping up with fellows 20 years my junior, my short irons need a bit more work.

      Ben,

The Ernie Els image is a good one to model your swing after. Where you went wrong was not increasing the leg drive for more power. It’s real easy to get the arms back in the swing. It is fine to want more power. In fact it is human nature to want to hit the ball farther. Now when you go to do this you will be thinking about using the legs so this time you won’t lose it. If you do hit shots at half speed and build it back up again.

I think this tip covers it:

  2. Hi Paul,

I am enjoying your tips very much, am I started practicing inside and outdoors because golg is extremely expensive in Brazil.
    So far so good.

I just saw the tip about Ernie Els, great stuff.
But the video image also shows text lines, ( I assume for people with hearing problems) and this is not really following your voice.
It translates what your are saying quite often in the wrong way. Swaying becomes slaying, swing becomes sling or slang and OK so becomes case so. Very funny but also disturbing and not reflecting the quality you put in the tips.
This is not the only video where it happens.

    I hope this is helpful.

    regards,
    Theo

      Theo,

The text is YouTube’s automated close caption system which is never right and I don’t have time to go through all of these tips to correct it. It tries to pick up what you are saying. Of course this will never be able to pick up what people are saying from a video.

Not sure why you are watching that version because that is one of the free tips. The other version is here:

      Colin,

Thank you for joining. Glad you like the tips.

As you continue on you will know exactly what you have been doing and what you need to be doing to improve. I hate guessing and feel people need to know the answers. It’s great when you know them. Then there is never any doubt and you don’t have to waste you time experimenting.

I’m a 69 over the hill golfer who has been trying to hit the ball with his arms all these years. Since purchasing your full swing video, I’m trying not to hit with my arms and the ball flies effortlessly just like Erie says. seems crazy. Can’t thank you enough, just wish I had understood this earlier. practice is fun again and a lot less tiring.

    thanks

      George,

Glad you are improving. I love hearing it. It is the exact opposite to what people thing. Unless people grasp this concept and try it they will never do it. The urge to hit the ball is too great. Keep up the good work.

  5. This is a great video that outlines the best golf philosophy. As I’m sure so many others have said, thank you for making this game I enjoy playing a little easier and more enjoyable.

    Hi Paul,
Where are you keeping these vids on dashboard? This video as well as the video you did with images about tempo. and imagining the shots of/picturing the swings of Els and Couples…I think there a few more. Hopefully you know the videos I’m speaking about.
Thanks-please send Pete my best. -Craig

    • Craig,

In the Dashboard there is a search box. Just enter whatever you are looking for and it will come up.

I think I need to add these most recent ones though. I will do that shortly.

    Paul,

I was in Montana Friday and stop to play Trestle Creek in St. Regis. I had forgot to put my driver in my condo bag so had to play the round uses my three-wood off the tee. I made a commitment to swing slow, touch my legs, and hit the finish position. What a magical feeling it was!

This round was my “aha” moment. Greater distance than I’d ever achieved and nothing but fairways. The good feeling it gives you has a compounding effect on your short game as well.

This slow down process insures good balance, solid face contact, and nails your magic positions. I didn’t “try” to do anything. It was a feeling of letting it had. Practicing your drills tells your brain what do do. Going easy you just let it happen. I tend to be flat but my hands just seemed to go to their proper upright position.

    Thanks Paul. I’m all in!

      Mike,

I keep telling everyone to slow down. Few do. Glad you tried it and saw amazing shots. So you slow down. You get it. Then you speed up the legs for more power when you are good at not hitting. Keep at it.

Today I found this Ernie Els video. I’m thinking “Hey, I just did that! And it works just like Ernie and Paul said it would!”

Trying to hit two-thirds and the ball seemingly rockets out to full distance.

    Paul,

On the PGA Tour Champions broadcast this past weekend in Ernie Els’ debut I heard the broadcast team refer to his swing as “controlled elegance.” Very apt description. I could also say the same about yours Paul.

Also, I really like Collin Morikawa’s swing. I think this young man is going to have a nice career and has a swing that will be kind to his body over the years. Very in control. I see a lot of your teachings in his swing.

Take care and thanks always for your great instruction!
    Mike
