Great tip Paul! I have struggled a bit with the touch the head position. Doing these practice swings I can definitely see how it makes it easier to get to that position.

      Steve,

Very good. This is one of the most important positions yet is the first one everyone forgets. Got to make it perfect.

Paul. I remember when you analyzed the follow through position of some members, many of them had taken some of their left hand (I think) off of the club in the touching the head position. I tend to do this as well.
It’s this a sign of a failure to rehinge in the follow through,
or does it indicate some other fault?

That should read the right hand coming off of the club

      Stephen,

I used to let go of the club into the follow through. I tried for years to fix it. The day I got it was the day it stopped trying to hit the ball with my arms. So tight wrists and the club has to give somewhere to hit the position. I gives in your hands letting go. Secure grip loose wrists. Whatever you are feeling, reduce the hitting ever more.

    Hi Paul
My wrists unlock about a foot before hitting the ball instead of 3 feet after. Any tips/ videos etc to help?
    Many thanks, Brian

      Roy,

This will help. This is vital position for power and consistency yet few have it mastered.

It’s not the website Jim. I have no such issues. I suspect it’s your device.

On TOUR, many very good players play the” punch shot “(they don’t finish the throughswing and hold the club midway to the normal finishing position) when they are shooting for the green with their irons to enhance their precision .Should the rehinging be done with ths shot also ?
I seldom play the” punch shot” myself ,except when going under a tree limb or going against the wind ,so to keep the ball flying low.

      Raymond,

No. For punch and knock down shots the wrists would be locked. This is a specialty shot for special situations.

In focusing on the rehinge, the club snaps into the release, forward of my left foot, but feels like it is jerking forward and not smooth. I’m not sure if this is the right feeling or not. I will try to video it to see if it looks smoother than it feels.

      Eric,

The position may not be smooth at first as you are just learning it. Just check the position. Make sure there is a 90 degree angle in the lead wrist. Keep working it back and forth and loosen it up. Then do it again but continue to the back of the head. Keep doing this until it smoothens out. Like I said in the tip, most people do not do this because they are tight. As you keep doing it you will start to loosen up.

      Do this too:

Paul, at what point in our swing should the left elbow begin to bend at the followthrough. Should this occur around 9 o’clock or after that period.

This tip on hingeing on the follow through has been very helpful. I have been having trouble getting to the back the head at the follow through in I think it was because I was hingeing incorrectly.
