  1. Hi Paul. I worked today on speeding up my downswing hip rotation as soon as I felt the tension at the top of my backswing. When I made an effort to keep my grip pressure at a 2 on a I to 10 scale I hit some great shots. High and with good distance. When I was too slow with my rotation I left the ball out to the right. Increasing my rotation straightened out my ball flight. I can’t believe how this easier feeling swing is producing good distance and I am getting back a nice high ball flight . Once I have this rotation down better I will incorporate and concentrate on the straightening of my left leg and getting the right thigh to touch the left. Thanks again for the great lesson you have me last Friday at Bears Best Las Vegas. Hope to be back there to see you this August .

      Joe,

That’s great. I’m glad you are feeling and working on it. Sounds like good scores are just around the corner.

The leg drive will be the key into the future. Keep trying to perfect it.

It was a true pleasure meeting and working with you. Let’s do it again sometime.

      Raymond,

Just keep working on it going as hard as you can. People just go a little harder. I want you doing the swings above the ground as hard and fast as you can. Keep doing it until you can do it in balance. This will increase it in your swing. If you just go a little harder it will not be enough because you never drive as hard in your real swing as you do in the drill.

Paul I need your advice. My driver is 3 years old and I am looking for more distance. (like every one) Should I go to a demo day and buy one or is it worth going to a club maker and get tested and have one made?

      Joel,

I would go to a demo day find something you like the look and feel of. Once you find it you then get fitted for it. Unless of course you find the magical club at the demo day then you see if they will sell it to you.

      Manuel,

That’s great news. I love hearing it. Anyone can do this. They just have to understand it and do it a few times. Once you feel it you will never want to stop feeling it. Keep at it.

    Paul,
When I have filmed my swing my hips are just barely open at impact(maybe 10 degrees) and I know I wouldn’t be able to see the backside (left cheek) clearly from down the line at impact. I was just at a golf shop and all my swings were 100mph plus so im worried driving the hips faster would result in those push fades even tho I know I need to in order to swing with less arms. Does this drill work well with your unlocking the wrist drills?

Just a side note this has been a complete start over for my golf swing and I have been hitting some very pure shots and am very excited about where my game can get to as I continue to work at it.

    Hi Paul
Nice tip again. I belong to the class of elder golfers (63). When I concentrate on hips rotation, I rotate my hips too fast (I suppose…) so the result is often push Fade or even slice because I feel the club face is far to be square at impact and often I almost top the ball.
I don’t have this problem when I concentrate on other aspect of the swing and the ball flies about
125m (7-iron) direct to the target. But If I want to increase the distance a little bit so I try to rotate a little bit faster most of the time the result is pushing fade or slice. It is a little bit frustrating. Any advice, please? Thanks in advance.

Paul, Great lesson I spent 45 minutes on getting the feeling of my hips working first. I’ve been working on starting with the lower body because I realize after 20 years of playing baseball those movements came natural, but for what ever reason I was always trying to swing faster by swinging harder. I’m starting to get it with my lower body but I need more reptiles so it becomes automatic. Thanks.
What are your thoughts on single plane versus a 2 plane swing.

      Tom,

Glad you liked it and are starting to work on it. You used the legs and hips in baseball so you need to do this in golf. The problem is in golf the ball is stationary. This gets you trying to hit the ball whereas in baseball it is coming at you so you automatically load on the back leg with the arms and wrists relaxed. As you go to hit it you fire the lower and the bat follows.

So in golf you need to work on the swing. You learn how to coil, load and hinge into the backswing. Even Hogan and Moe had a flatter rotational plane of the shoulders like the golfers I mentioned. The only difference was arm position (he was flatter). He was not all bent over as promoted in a 1 plane swing. If you turn your body first and keep the arms turned off the clubshaft will flatten towards, if not at, 90 degrees to your body in the downswing. Watch:

2 Things Flatten the Plane: https://ignitiongolf.com/2-things-flatten-plane/
      See The Plane Flatten: https://ignitiongolf.com/see-the-plane-flatten/

You then change your thinking and focus on using the lower to hit the ball with the arms turned off. If done right, you will go to my follow through positions. This is why I teach the follow through first. Why now know where you are going to swing through to so you can do it and keep doing it?

The best golfers of all time did a 2 plane swing.b Jack, Tiger, Snead, Nelson, Couples, Faldo, Watson, Jones so why would I teach a 1 plane swing. I fix people all of the time who try to do this swing on their own. It is very difficult to work on this swing on your own. I like simple and effective.

    Hi Paul,
In addition to turning hips faster, I have also been trying to create more torque feeling in my legs. I have been doing this by leaning forward a bit at address so I can feel the tightness in my legs. Then whenI strart the downswing with my hips I find I do hit the ball with more power but I also top the ball and hit many low shots. I’m guessing it’s from leaning forward and getting closer to the ball. What can you suggest. Should I be trying to create more torque in the legs?

Also do you recommend doing this drill with say the orange whip or some other traing club?

    Thanks,
    Tom

Please explain hip rotation vs slide/rotation. I have struggled with thinking rotation and hitting behind the ball. When I start by slide I hit ball more solid with many good shots but also good number of pushes. Watching this video I see that you immediately post your left leg (or it appears that way). Please explain.

  10. Paul,

I love this video and other “feelings” type videos. What we feel is a big part of how we learn. We have to get where we feel it for ourselves. I was really striving for this feel yesterday at the course and had multiple drives in the 245-250 range. My pre-Wilson best drives were 215 and had been about 230 after I starting following your teachings. This one has helped take me to the next level. BTW, this is at sea level and I am 66 years of age. I am confident your teachings will help me play competitive golf well through my 80s and even later.

    Thanks so much Paul!!
    Mike

  11. Paul,

I feel like when I’m doing it right, I see my right hip pass through out of the corner of my eye before the ball gets hit. If i don’t, I know I’m not getting good separation.

In addition to promoting powerless arms, I’ve found your “hit it 2/3 normal distance” drill to be very effective at getting the hips moving and moving first. We have a 170 pole at my local course driving range and it is the perfect target for me with the driver to work on hips first. Of course, if I do it right, the ball sails way past it anyway with that incredible center strike feel, yet I feel like I am justing bunting it. An incredibly satisfying feel.

    Thanks
    Mike
