  1. I found a loose grip with the “V” pointed to the right back eye then the club will stay intact throughout the swing.

There is a slight hand action (not even waggle like) before the front shoulder turns. I found this out by trial an error. I watched Ben Hogan’s trade mark take away with a slight waggle (but really Both hands “V” movement ever so small). The wrists are loose but on the club throughout. You feel your hands together (“V”) throughout the swing.

    Paul what say you?

  2. Hi Paul,
How can you have loosen wrists if you play a 6iron on a wet ground and you are a really slim woman with thin wrists. Each time i take a divot the clubface is deviated and the ball goes to the right!!!

So, when i try to loosen my wrists the divot stop the momentum and when i try to tighten the wrists to avoid this divot issue the shot is failed…

    Any thought?
    Thanks

    • Michele,

Ask female Tour Pros how they do it? If they can do it you can too. If you are hitting it fat you need to get more weight off the back foot at impact. The proper divot never hurts anyone’s arms and wrists. Fat shots off hard ground usually does. That is why you need to fix the fat shots. In your case it is wet ground which should not be a problem. With soft ground this should not hurt. So watch this video and focus on your weight distribution:

Also, you need to work more on securing the club in your hands throughout your swing while keeping the wrists loose. Loose is not a letting go of the club. It it secure in the grip and loose in the wrists. Watch the video below. Do the tee drill I show. This will secure your hands and loosen your wrists. Do it for the next month and you will never have to work on it again:

  3. Hi Paul

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply. It has helped me a lot. I am working on the 2 drills and I can already see some improvement in my game.

You wrote “loose is not a letting go of the club. It is secure in the grip and loose in the wrists”. To me it was the magic sentence !

Keep up the good work !

    Hi Paul

Thanks for another great tip. will try this, I have also noticed at the top of my back swing my right hand disconnects with the left hand(right hander). So both hands are not snug together. What is the main disadvantage with this?
    thanks

      Andrew,

The disadvantage is that when your hand comes off the club it has to grip back on. In this process it may tighten the hands/wrists. I want the arms powerless so I really wouldn’t be doing this. Keep your wrists loose and allow them to hinge. I would think your right wrists is too tight so the grip is loosening to create the hinge. Focus on loosening this up. I would put a tee in your grip and work on hinging your wrists without dropping the tee. This will secure the hands yet loosen the wrists.

      • Paul,

I know you are absolutely right about the hands coming off the club, but for the life of me I can’t seem to stop it. I can finish with the club behind my head, but I can’t seem to check the habit. I’m thinking I have loose wrists, and powerless arms, but apparently not. Any other possibilities?

Lots of great progress on both the long and short game…chipping tips have delivered outstanding results.

        • Bob,

No other possibilities. Your wrists are too tight but you are not good at keeping them powerless. You just started working on this just over a month ago. Keep at it.

UST is a great training aid. Glad you like it. Just keep using it and you will see huge lag and long shots.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear you are doing well. I never joke about the golf swing.

Hi Paul This is a follow up on your reply about my grip changing during the swing. wrists not loose enough. when praticing rolling the wrist , in practice swing i can really feel the roll, is it possible to roll wrists to much and get big hooks, when i get the wrist rolling properly ,my grip doesnt change. have not pratice hitting balls yet , just wondering what shots should look like when i am focusing on rolling wrists, hooks ,straight,or blocks. whats your best tip on working on the wrist release..

      Barry,

If you are manually rolling the wrists the ball should be hooking. Once you get this forget this. Work on coiling and uncoiling. See my previous reply.

  6. Hi Paul

Thanks for your excellent dedication to helping us all… you are such an amazing teacher.

I am right handed and my right wrist has little extension flex (doesn’t flex back to outer arm). This seems to prevent me from getting to the “touch the head” position. I can either (a) just feel the shaft in “proximity” to my head, or (b) touch it higher toward the grip end but that tightens my arms.

    Anything you recommend?

    Kind regards,
    John
