    Paul,
To ‘release’ do you apply any snapping of the wrists consciously? Or does the release just happen naturally with no effort?

    Thanks,
    Tom

      Tom,

If you are working on the release then you are purposely releasing it. Once you have worked on it you turn your arms off and it will release on its own with no effort.

Paul, is it important where the button of the club is pointing? I may cocking my wrist so that the button of the club is not 90 degrees but more towards 45 (or even less) degrees, that is, pointing too far away from my feet or even the target line

      Jose,

The butt should be pointing straight down at no more than 90 degrees. You do not want to be hinging these wrists too much. If you do, it will be harder to stop them from overhinging when you do a real swing. The idea is to feel the club releasing down and through. So set it going back then release it into the through swing. I just don’t want you hinging it too much going back.

Hi Paul – How does grip pressure relate to loose wrists? It seems my wrists are relatively loose (or looser than they used to be) when I focus on gripping the club lightly, so it seems the two are related but I’m not sure this is the entire story.

On a related note, I played a round the other day with a former hockey player who really seemed to have loose wrists. He got a ton of distance with a very easy swing. When I remarked on his wrist action before the round on the range, he attributed it to his hockey days and told me that during pre-game warmups, hockey players often hold their sticks with one hand mid-shaft, and rotate their wrist back and forth, essentially forming a large propeller with the stick, for the express purpose of loosening their wrists.

      Mark,

Your grip is secure yet your wrist are loose. I just did a tip on this here:

      Secure Grip Loose Wrists: https://ignitiongolf.com/secure-grip-loose-wrists/

You are holding the club at 2 out of 10 to start. The grip then increases to 8 out of 10 by the time you hit the top and stays at that pressure until after you have hit the ball. All this while your wrists are loose. Seems contradictory but it can be done.

That’s interesting about the hockey player. I didn’t know they worked on things like that.

Paul, would you say that your style of the release at impact (rotation) is the same as left wrist with sight forward lean at impact, causing compression of the ball, the same? or different. Both styles seam to rotate but one has a forward lean.

    • March 29, 2015

      Paul Wilson

Gary, You get the forward lean by learning the right fundamentals. The club leans because the it is still descending when the club hits the ball. This is due to your body tilting back as you hit the ball. In doing so you are on more of an angle than you were at address.

How To Work On Forward Shaft Lean And The Full Release: https://ignitiongolf.com/shaft-lean-full-release

I want you to manually release the club to get you squaring the fast fast. For the sake of rolling it for a few days/weeks you can square the face consistently and never leave it open. Once you get this you move on to working on other fundamentals in the swing.

  5. This is an excellent drill. Loose wrists and rolling them through impact is something I struggle with.
One of my weak shots is from 80/100 yards. I regularly leave them short, it drives me nuts! Loosening the wrists and releasing them at impact coupled with proper lower body rotation should give me more crisp shots with a bit more zing.
    Am I correctly understanding this?

    • March 29, 2015

      Paul Wilson

      David,

I would think you leave these short from guessing if you are going to hit the shot or not. In doing so, you are looking up a little which adds more loft to the club. So you started with the club at a certain loft then looked up and added more loft. By loosening the wrists and rolling it over you will hit your shots with the appropriate loft getting a better trajectory. So yes, you get it. Just keep doing this and in no time you will hear a better sound quality and a lower ball flight.

  6. Paul,You showed in another video how you used the thumb of YOUR left hand to roll the left hand over .
Question : how do you combine the HINGE/REHINGE move with the ” FLAT LEFT WRIST AT IMPACT” all golf teachers Promote?

Hi Paul Pulling some of these shots is that usually just to much arms not enough body rotation at the start should just more initial lower body at start of downswing solve this even if arms are not completely quiet.

      Barry,

Pulling = you are pulling the club down with your arms. I did a tip on this as a simple way to remember why you are pulling.

Yes, turn the arms off, start the body first and you will hit it dead straight.

  8. Hi Paul. I have been working on this drill for about three weeks now and I am amazed how far I am hitting the ball with just using my arms. I am looking forward to turning my arms off and using the lower body. Thx for this great tip it has taught me how to release the club. Still pulling and hooking the ball somrtimes. I notice we have not had any new tips lately just asking as I am having withdrawal symtems !!!!

Still working on this drill I am finding I hit the ball a lot more solid and just as far I am now thinking I want to try it on the course. I was watching Brooke Henderson win in Hawaii and I noticed she grips down with all her clubs thanks for all the great tips What would you say to me if I wanted to grip down like this all the time

      Rod,

Do it if you want just don’t grip down too much. Also, when you grip down you might lose a little yardage as you will narrow the arc a little but if you are shorter in stature they might actually fit you better than regular length clubs. Shorter club = more control. Longer clubs = more distance.
