  1. Paul don’t I need to squat down a little before I touch the knees so I don’t loose the tush line I had in the backswing, if I just rotate the hips right away I feel to close to the ball at impact could you give me some feedback thanks**

    • Carlos,

Does it look like I am squatting? No. Do you have to squat? No. Just turn and touch your legs together. To get the feeling just throw a few balls overhand with a mid iron stance. When you do your lower body will turn and your legs will touch. I am certainly not too close to the ball doing this. If you are I think there are bigger problems.

Forget the squat. How are you going to squat exactly the same every time? If you should be doing this in your swing every golf pro in the world would squat before they hit the ball. I did a tip on this here:

  2. Excellent reminder ,PAUL,thank you for drawing our attention:that’s exactly what I happen to do from Time to Time ,when I don’t pay attention and have a sloppy swing .
    Now two questions :
1 Do we endeavor to have a high finish ,like so many pros do ,like BEN HOGAN and others ,or do we let THE through swing finish more flat around our neck (That’s what you show )
2 Is THE outside insole of your left foot bending outwards ,or should you finish flat footed on THE left foot ?

  3. Oh how valuable this is……………… I practiced this touching for a LONG time at home and it was hard to get. Now, Im finally hitting much longer and straighter………. this is key folks……… gotta do it…………….

    • Ralph,

Glad you got the legs touching. It is key. Get this and you have another power source. Another power source means you don’t have to use your arms to hit the ball.

Hi Paul when i reach the follow through position, i find alot of the time when i check my follow thrrough is okay, knees amd club. but my grip has gone from neutral very strong ,should the grip change through swing. i get 3,4 bad hooks a round use to think just didnt start lower body , but recently think this changing grip may be part of the problem.

      Barry,

This is telling you that your wrists are too tight. I used to do this too. The day I stopped trying to hit the ball was the day my grip ended up the same as it was at address. I tried everything to fix this throughout the years to no avail. So all I can recommend, is checking your grip at address to make sure it is perfectly neutral. Then keep working on not hitting with the arms while keeping the wrists loose. If you do, you will stop the grip from moving as well.

Here is a tip I did on the back hand coming off the club in the follow through. Same thing:

If you are hooking without trying to hook it you have a strong grip. I did a tip on this here:

Hi Paul I think that is the root of my problem when i take a relaxed practise swing ,i can feel the wrist rolling over properly, will work on it , the thought fear i have i think is this rolling of the wrist over will make the ball hook even more, and i end up flipping the wrist sometimes. Hitting the ball best i have in years, if i could erase–4 swings a round life would be great.Read your tips every day, really has improved my game. thanks.

      Barry,

Don’t look at the hook as a problem. Look at the hook as “at least I squared the clubface, I over did it but I squared it as opposed to slicing it.” In other words see the good in it. If you are never slicing you never have to work on the wrist roll over. All you should be working on is coiling and uncoiling your body while keeping the arms powerless. Give it a try. I feel you are close.

    Hi Paul,

The slow motion helps tremendously to actually see the proper sequence. Thanks.

Hi Paul. I love your way of teaching. In in just a couple of weeks my swing and ball striking have greatly improved. I am still having a problem with my driver and and hybrids slicing. I know you say that if your turning the hips too quickly the club face doesn’t have time to square by impact position. If my irons get square and my longer clubs don’t you say that I should slow the hip rotation. Is it possible that I need tour stiff shafts as opposed to stiff shafts with these clubs? I currently use steel stiff irons and stiff graphite woods and hybrids. I’ve been working so hard on the firing of the lower body that it’s hard for me to slow that down. I can’t possibly compare myself to a pro with a 10 handicap but you guys don’t seem to slow your lower body with your longer clubs. I’d appreciate your thoughts on this and thanks again for all your help. I have many friends in your business and none of them have relayed information that I can relate to nearly as well as you. Thanks again!

Paul, thank you for the feedback. I truly appreciate it.

The problem is not the shafts. If your shafts were too weak you would be hooking it because they kick too early.

You are right we do not slow down the lower body. We are going at it hard. The difference is we are releasing it and you are not.

So, here’s what you do. Just switch your focus to rolling the wrists and getting it hooking. This does not mean you are even slowing down the hip rotation it is that you are not thinking about it.

Now, you roll it over early from the top with these longer clubs. Yes, you will be feeling your arms when you work on this. The goal is to get the face rolling over. Manually rolling it will speed up your arms so they are in sync with your lower body. Now the ball will be going left. Keep doing this until you are hooking every shot. Only at this point, you switch the thought back to the legs powering the swing. If you do you will be hitting it straight.

Too bad you weren’t here I could fix you in 2 seconds.

    Paul,

Should you keep your eyes down on the ball until after you have hit it to ensure a good contact?

    Many thanks,
    Paul

  9. Hi Sir, my question is on the follow through. How much of a shoulder turn is needed. Does the belt and shoulder point at the target or does it go past the target line ending parallel with the target line. Thanks for your help and advise.

    • You would want your belt buckle to face left of your target (for a right handed golfer). This would be enough turn. Or your golf club perpendicular to the target line. Anymore than this would be overkill and any less you could start to hit shots right of your target. But if you physically can not get to that much turn then something less would be ok.
