  1. Paul: Do ypu lign the leading edge of the SW right of or right at the pin? Thanks

You will have the face at the pin. Even a little right works too. This is too hard to explain. Try it at the pin then right of it and see which works for you.

    Hi Paul,
Can hingeing the rists at the start of the back swing help in playing a flop shot?

Eriab, This just depends how long of a shot you are hitting. If you are hitting a longer flop shot you are doing your normal backswing. If you are doing a shorter flop shot you are hinging the wrists early. I explain this in my pitching technique. To vary the backswing length you should be thinking of the butt end of the club and hinging it immediately as you take the club back. This is all in my pitching video series. To apply it to a flop shot just open the face and aim left.

    THANK YOU PAUL.
    Today,i had a 45 yard pitch shot.
Remembering your instructions,i used a sand wedge and floated the ball on to the green. It stopped about a yard from it’s pitch mark. WOW!!!

Eriab, Good job. After you get used to my pitching technique this will occur all the time. Knowing exactly what you are going to to reduces the pressure of the shot which makes it a whole lot easier. Keep at it.

I have the yips on pitch shots and chip shots. I tried your hinging method in a practice session recently and it worked pretty well. But as soon as I am on the golf course, the yips come back most of the time.

This yips problem began two years ago. At that time I was a +1 handicap. Now it goes from 0 to 3.

Does my age bring up this problem? I’m 63 years old and I still hit the ball well enough to get many greens in regulation. In fact, my average is 13 greens per round. But when I miss a green, three times out of four it’s a bogey.

    Is this curable?

      Richard,

If you are yipping chips you are thinking about hitting the ball (especially under pressure). So you have to take your my off of hitting. You should be thinking of the butt end of the club and driving it towards the target. Make sure you do the 3-4 knuckle grip with the ball back in the stance. If you are hitting it fat you have too much weight on the back foot at impact. So make sure your weight is on the forward foot and keep it there throughout the stroke.

Also, make sure you search all the chipping tips using the red nav bar above. In there I posted a bunch or drills to get you thinking about the butt of the club. Give these a try and constantly work on taking your mind off the head of the club contacting the ball.

Your age has nothing to do with it. It is a mental problem. You are trying to get the ball too close and care too much about the result. Just get the ball on the green every time first. Once you can get all balls on the green then go for the pin.

      Pitching

Again, just get the ball on the green. Take it in stages. This way there is not pressure. Also, when you are hitting pitch shots you should be thinking of your belt buckle turning. If you are you are not thinking of hitting anything. Just turn and let your arms go along for the ride.

So start taking your mind off the ball and you will be just fine.

  5. Hi Paul;
Is this not the same as a bunker shot?

    • Michael,

I like pitching and flop shots to be HINGE/TURN. This will also work out of the bunker.

    Paul.
in this video of flop shot out of long rough, are you hitting directly at ball or are you hitting behind ball a few inches ie taking grass and the ball?

    • August 30, 2014

      Paul Wilson

      Paul,

On that shot I am doing a normal flop shot. Trying to hit behind it may cause me to hit it fat. Because there is grass behind the ball I am hitting the grass first but not thinking about purposely trying to hit behind it.

With the long back swing and hinging with a somewhat short shot to the pin, I would have the tendency to decelerate. I imagine there is a trust factor that has to be developed. I tend to find this type of shot during a decent round and then not so decent after that hole.
Overall, I am progressing, as I work on the different positions and slow the swing down and just use my hips and legs. The season is coming to a close soon, but I am excited about next year.

    Thanks,

    Paul

      Paul,

You need to watch my dialing in flop shots tip.

      Here it is:

Just keep working on mastering the positions in practice swings. This way you can start the season off playing great golf. Unfortunately, some people seem to think it’s time to hang up the clubs. You can never quit practicing.

  8. Hi Paul,
Great lesson, One thing i don’t see in the slo-mo video is the wrist flip that i find in your regular videos (and in videos to cure the slice). Do we still do the wrist flip on this? I see it occurring in a subtle way after the impact.
