  1. hit my best shots when arms areas powerless as i can get them, it reaches a point where my ball flight starts going right, is there a point where there can be too little arms .

    • Just remember that you are not so loose that you are letting go of the golf club. You are still holding on and you still have connection under the left armpit. Powerless arms means you are not hitting or helping the shot in any way with your arms. To understand what I mean stand up, outstretch your left arm, ,clench your fist as tight as you can now turn your body left and to the right. When you do you will see that your arm moved even though you didn’t move your arm. Although your arm was tight it was still powerless because you weren’t using it. It was only moving because your body moved it.

In my book and videos I talk about wet spaghetti arms because this is A simple thought to get people to swing easier. I do not want them all floppy throughout the swing. You still need extension of the left arm going back and the connection between the left arm and arm pit in the downswing. Also, you need both arms to fully stretch out after impact to the release point. Then the right arm stretches out on the through swing.

Make sure you check your positions in a mirror against mine. This way you will see what you are doing and what I am doing and recognize if you are in the same positions or not.

Also, if you keep hitting the ball to the right the face after the open. So, roll it over earlier than necessary to get the ball hooking. Once you can do that you are no longer getting it right. At that point you forget rolling it over and work on using your lower body to hit the shot. If the lower body starts first will no longer hook it you will hit it dead straight.

Do you have an opinion on the Impact Snap training device?

    • I have an IMPACT SNAP training aid .It’s a useful device And it helps to feel the Release point .It has And advantage ,it CAN be used indoors .There are two other pretty good traning aids to get Release right .
One is the SWINGRITE ,it’s a short club which clicks like the IMPACT SNAP ,but it CAN be adjusted more or less tighter when you increase swing Speed .
The other one ,which I like most ,is the SNAG SNAPPER ,developed by BEN JACKSON ,a WELL known US physiotherapist And trainer :it’s just a short stick with a riblon attached to it .You have to swing fast with it to make it SNAP like a WHIP.
Then There’s PAUL WIILSON simple drill with the sandwedge ,hé has a smart viideo lesson on it .
It’s the simplest OF all the training aids !

      Jule,

Holds too much and and bows the lead wrist too much. This will never help. Plus, it gets you thinking of holding the face at impact. No way you will do this consistently. There is no substitute for hard work.

Here’s what happens if you have knuckles down at impact:

Also, here is why your back wrist is bent:

And this is what happens if you hold that angle too long:

I find the best way to do drills if you are hitting balls is to hit them into a net where you don’t have to worry about the result of the strike. You only need to think about what you are accomplishing with the drill

Hi Paul – Your coaching method has transformed my game greatly. Also, great tips as always. I have a question – I am struggling with understanding whether the club face should be closed, square or slightly open at address? Whatever your answer is, how does that look for driver, woods and iron? Any tips / drills will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Rajat

      Rajat,

You want the face square at address.

If it is open you will have the tendency to take it too much inside. Closed you may take it outside. Yes, this is the opposite to what you think.

You need it square with a neutral grip because this can greatly affect the clubface at the top. Watch:

  5. Paul ,I always practice YOUR drills at home without a ball ,just swinging the club ,in front OF a Window pane to Contrôl what I’m doing .One is face on ,the other one is at right Angles ,So I CAN Check follow through And backswing ,if I wish.
When I don’t play on the golf course ,I do up to 200 ” dry run ” swings per day .
My swing has become fairly Consitent this way .
When I want to refilne ,I use the SSRTT to Check my Speed .
Some times I place two SSRTTT in a row ,distant by a Few inches ,to see the Speed at impact point And after impact point .I try not to decelerate after impact point.

      Raymond,

200 per day is fantastic! I wish everyone would do this. This is what it takes to improve.

  6. Paul,I also train my putting and my chipping in my basement .I can’t train short pitching ,thé ceiling is too low .Puts from 4 feet , to 24 feet ,every 4 feet ,20 balle from each distance ,on a ” WELLING” carpet .Chipping in a small round net ,roughly 100 chips .
I played Saturday 18 holes with a Pro who wants to become a Golf Instructor .
I was not ridiculous ,The Pro was amazed by m’y consitency .I’m not long due to âge ,lack of flexibility ,lack of ” explosiveness ” ,but consistency and excellent short game makes up for much of thèse déficiencies .
I’m happy to Play good golf at my âge and enjoy thé game ,thanks to you ,Jeremy KLINKHAMER and DAVE BRESLOW ,all of whom have helped me to improve .

      Raymond,

This is a good way to practice too. I used to do tons on short game indoors in the winter. It just takes effort.

When doing free swings (no ball) I have a pretty solid finish position (touch legs/head). The second I put a ball down I get no finish at all. I am making decent contact, spin and direction. Just no finish and likely limited distance as a result. I have tried to force the finish position as you have suggested but I’m really only about 3/4 through when I stop. Suggestions:ideas?
