Hi Paul, been following your instruction for a while now and during practice at home and on the range I can achieve the positions. I notice however that in my actual shots during a round I often don’t complete the swing to follow thru. In other words I feel as if I hit a punch shot with an abbreviated follow thru. What is the most likely cause for this? Not turning the lower body or trying to hit with arms, or both? I can do the follow thru correctly all day long if I am not hitting a ball. Of course eventually in a real round a ball is required. 🙂
Thanks, enjoy your tips/instruction very much.

      Tom,

You care more about the ball than the positions when you play. So the next time you play you do not care about your ball. You are thinking of doing something completely different. You are going to hit your shot and not matter how long aft the ball is gone you are going to take the shaft and touch your head. If you never do something new out there you will never change and this is a waste of time.

You are not good at the position. So at least do it. Then in no time it will get easier and easier. This is what I go through on a daily basis. People just whack balls and watch the ball. I have to convince them to actually do it and I must say “touch your head” a minimum of 50 times in the course of a lesson. No joke. And this is with 90% or more of all people I teach.

You are different. You say you can do it on the course. So you are scared to do something different on when you play. You are scared to blwo your round trying something new but again, if you don’t try it you will never get it.

I would go out by myself and play 9 holes. Have 3 balls in your pocket. Swing easy with this goal in mind. If you don’t do it drop a ball and try it again. Just tell yourself your swing is not over until you feel that club touching your head.

      You can do it. Focus.

  2. How does this tip square with One Widest Arc?

      John,

It’s a drill to get you to feel if you are using your arms of not when you swing. If your arms were turned off the weight of the club would pull them to the widest point 100% of the time. So you would do your widest arc and you only have 1 widest arc. So by actually feeling and knowing if you are even using them you can start to turn them off. Give it a try.

  3. great answer. IT makes perfect sense. I will certainly give it my best.I am struggling with allowing the situation affect whether I HIT or go POWERLESS. very frustrating.

  4. Hi Paul, it is a very good drill, yesterday I played and I did powerless arms in the warm up and used it when playing,(it was a disaster) but I was very happy because my normal shot is a slice, but yesterday I hooked 90% of the shots, “yessss I can Hoook” , I now have to work on rotion speed of the body, thanks.

      Jose,

Very good. Stick to the plan. Get rid of the slice then work on body to straighten it out. You get it so you should see a huge improvement in the near future.

  5. Paul,
Had a distressing thing happene to me yesterday while golfing . I totally lost my swing on my drive and fairway shots and could not get it back no matter what I did . Couldn’t drive the ball at all . Stop playing except for just playing short game shots since I was afraid that whatever I was doing I would create a bad habit . I did play the day before and the round took 6 hours(yikes!!)since was playing with my nephew and his roomates who don’t play very much.Any thoughts ?

  6. There are many different ways to train to swing wihtout the arms ,the one you show ,but also with a medicine ball or with the SWING CHAIN .
If you don’t move (FAST)your lower body and legs ,nothing good happens

Paul I was wondering about the position of your shoulders at completion of your follow thru. They are facing the target. Do you actively turn the shoulders to finish this position or is this result of your hip turn

    thank you
