Regarding the right elbow on the back swing: I was taught that the right elbow should never bend more than 90*. Because I can see that your right elbow appears to bend about 60* at the top, I’m trying to get mine to bend a little more. Hope that’s correct.

      Roy,

I don’t even think about the right arm and what angle it is on. I am more concerned about the left arm. This is because Iron Bryon does not have a right arm until after the ball is hit. Focus on setting the left arm and the right should be in position. In the past I have worked on this right arm and all it gets you doing it hitting with the arms. If you want to let it bend let it bend. Keep them powerless and focus on hitting it with the lower body.

  2. Paul ,You are right :JACK NICKLAUS was accused of having a flying elbow many Times ,and yet h

    • Raymond,

Some people still talk about it. I dusted it off to tell someone about it the other. Just need a thought to get the guy out of a tricky position. It seemed to work.

  3. Paul ,What about the suggestion of putting the glove under the left armpit to stay connected until way into the throughswing?
Generally speaking ,do you favour having the arms close to the body to generate more power ?

    Paul,

When I tried this drill with a glove or towel I found it tightened my arms so I gave it up and spent more time focusing on maintaining the triangle in the swing and my trigger.

BTW – has anyone ever asked you how many red shirts you have hanging in your closet? : -)

      John,

Yes, it may tight you up for a bit just like other drills and times you are working on positions. Once you get it though you turn them back off. So there are times when I want you thinking arms.

I have 8 new ones. Probably 20 older ones. Lots of red. I wear black at night. So basically a closet of red and black. Never waste any time trying to figure out what to wear.

If one hinges the wrists with the thumbs pointing to your right ear as advocated in your Body Swing programme then this illiminates the problems highlighted here. Is this correct Paul?

Very good reminder ,Paul ,of what not to do.
This drill was taken from NICK FALDO’ book (I still have this book) a long time ago :at that time I revered FALDO’s style and teaching and results (DAVID LEADBETTER in fact )You could do it with a towel also or with a glove .Alas,it gave me a very tight and short swing with not enough rise of the arms and hands in the backswing ,so I discarded completely.
In my opinion it ruins your swing (That’s what it did for me !) .
I now take utmost care to lift my arms enough ,or better push up the right forearm while keeping the left arm extended ,while rotating fully ,chin up ,left shoulder under the chin .I suspect there’s some flying elbow in my swing ,as my shoulders are getting stiffer with age ,but my entire swing has become so much more efficient .
