Hi Paul. The other night I was reading Golf Magazine and the famous Mr. Harmon said you should slide the front hip a few inches toward the target, BEFORE initiating the turn. I’ve heard of this bump technique before and always found it confusing because you can easily over-do it and sway. I believe Harmon feels the bump forward assures the weight shift and the proper inside to out swing path, Your simple turn and touch the knees method eliminates a potentially troublesome step in the downswing and can’t be done without the proper weight shift. I’ve watched your swing a hundred times and I don’t notice any hip slide before the rotation. Please elaborate on the bump technique versus your simpler solution.

    Thanks, Ron

      Ron,

The shift will occur if you end up no the tip of our toe so why tell you to do something you are going to do? The thing I don’ know is are you going to turn? I also do not want you hitting pushes and push fades due to overdoing the bump. Even if you turn a little too much instead of shifting you get a pull which is in play.

So hard to rotate the lower body. My arms are screaming to power thru the golf swing and I feel I have no tempo. Also I hate hitting balls off of the pads they have at the driving range. However I will not give up on this powerless arms technique. I’m tired of having 5 different swings on the golf course and hitting awful shots and an occasional good shot. I hope to have a effortless swing like Paul. Powering the golf club with my lower body.

      Cody,

If you are having trouble rotating your lower body you are swinging way too hard. You need to at least do this. If you are going at top speed you will never do it. By slowing down you can at least do it. This is what I call do it right at 1mph instead of wrong at 100mph.

So slow it down. Get it. Then speed up ONLY the lower body.

You need to be doing this drill immediately:

DRILL: This Is The Best Drill You Should Be Doing Right Now: https://ignitiongolf.com/drill-three-quarter-distance/

I like your attitude. Just keep doing it. Once you hit that one shot that flies farther than your best shot when you hit hard you will want to do it every time.

        Lotta,

This is a drill to give the feeling of the leg touching nothing more. You should not even be thinking about the upper body you should be understanding how this move should be working and what it feels like to do it. In other words quit making it complicated. Just touch your legs together by turning and ending up on the tip of your toe. Feel how they touch together and remember this feeling. Then do it in practice swings.

      Lotta,

This is one drill you should do to get the feeling and understanding of the touch the legs position. Once you get this you should be repeating this and all over positions so you have a complete, great swing by spring. This one position is just on position. You need to be working on them all.

I cannot decide which trigger. If you need to lock your leg then lock your leg. This may not be the trigger though. This is an important part of doing the move right. The leg is not locked because you are moving laterally instead of turning. So turn more and lock the leg allowing the back leg to come around and perfectly tough the other leg. Once you get this just either throw some balls overhand or do practice swings off the ground. As you do, feel what is making you do it. That is your trigger and what you need to be thinking about to power you swing into the future.

I have just read the comments above of the Paul “Aficionado’s “.My colleagues in golf should know Paul is the best golf teacher I know around nowadays .I can affirm that because I’m a kind of golf “perfectionist”,an old timer, seasoned golfer 79 years old who has read almost everything which has been written on golf technique ,from ancient to modern times.
The hip rotation swing Paul teaches is the basis of the modern swing:It’s exactly what did great BEN HOGAN and another wonderful stylist ,the Canadian GEORGE KNUDSON .Neither of these”bumped “forward the left hip (Pure nonsense ),but turned on their left leg (either straight ,as Paul advises and as does great stylist TIGER WOODS ),or slightly flexed (KNUDSON ,BEN HOGAN ) .At the end of his marvelous book “THE NATURAL GOLF SWING “GEORGE KNUDSON gives you 6 drills, very similar to the “Paul drill “of the present video ,one of them is called the “PENCIL DRILL “where you hold a pencil between your lips and make sure your pencil is orientated towards the target at the end of the swing .KNUDSON’s teaching is ,like Paul’s ,based on shifting naturally your weight to the back leg then to the right leg while rotating to the right ,then to the left :you LOAD ,then UNLOAD naturally just as Paul says .For the Lady with the Swedish/Norwegian patronym ,practise this drill every single day ,while thinking “LOAD ,UNLOAD “,it will work marvels for your swing

The perfect indoor practice drill, Paul. Thanks!

Thanks – as you know I have a tendency to drop my right shoulder – this is the answer.

On the subject of teaching golf – seems to me that every pro has their own way – the pros and the PGA seem to have no curriculum or standardised teaching method. I don’t know how you’d do it but it would be nice if you had a bunch of approved golf pros around the country who would teach the Swing Machine Golf system.

    Thanks again. Allan.

      Allan,

This is easier said than done. At present, I am really not busy enough to get other pros a full schedule. Without a huge list, huge advertising budget or articles in golf magazines it is up to people finding me. Maybe someday this will happen. For now, people need to come to us or do video golf lessons. More info here:

It’s amazing to me that more people do not take us up on this.

Paul, of all the videos my other golf pros that I have watched, your teaching methods are the easiest to follow. Your breakdown of the lower body controlling the arms is very precise. At my age, I just can’t practice like the young people. I heard years ago that golf was 80% mental and 20% physical. You have made golf more fun for me. This exercise that you gave today is great!

      Ken,

Thank you for the kind words. I truly appreciate it. The day I started making it simple I felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. Plus, I could instantly fix my own swing. So keep it simple. That is the way to go.

  8. Paul, this is truly a great tip because nothing could be more simple to understand. Years ago, I had some lessons at Grand Cypress in Florida and the instructor told me I was hitting the ball in my address position. It was his way of explaining my inability to turn properly. Unfortunately, I didn’t quite understand what he meant. Teaching the golf swing takes the proper imagery and somethings don’t work for everyone. Today’s tip is so simple, wvwryone should understand it.

    Thanks! Ron

    • Ron,

Glad you liked it. That one sure shows the way to turn the hips. Hope everyone saw it.

What if you”re bow legged….would your back knee still touch or do you just get the back knee as close as can to the front (finishing) knee?

    • Gregg,

It depends how bow legged you are. Slightly and it is not a problem. Severely and you will not touch. Understand why I want them touching. I want them touching so you can do it exactly right ever time because you get feedback of the legs touching one another. If you cannot touch then focus on the belt buckle pointing left each time as I show in tonight’s tip.

I have been using UER technique for about 3 weeks and I am being to understand why I went from 102 to 97 then 3 weeks later 89 to 88 I love the way you teach discipline and technique that is simple to understand and produces results Thank U

    Paul

    • John,

Wow, that’s great improvement. I love hearing it. Just take it step by step and do the practice swings daily making the positions precise. It can get exciting which makes people feel invincible. If so, you can start swinging harder and harder. I think you need to watch this tip:

      You Will Top It: https://ignitiongolf.com/you-will-top-it/

Keep us posted on your progress.

  11. Paul, this is a great tip. The feeling of rotating my hips is so much different and better than the feeling of sliding my hips.

Is there any “danger” in practicing this hip rotation while standing level? I like doing this drill standing level and it’s easy on my back and i can do it anywhere (even out in public). However, I find that when hitting a ball sometimes I come out of the shot, and i need to work on keeping my eyes titled (not level) and you mention in another video. If i practice this hip turn and Touch The Legs while standing level can it contribute to my tendency to stand up at impact? Should i be practicing this while in the position of a golf swing?

Paul, thanks for all your replies on the various posts i made yesterday. You can see that I am really digging into your principles and working hard to incorporate them. I hit a lot of balls yesterday, working on the various things you teach and it made a material difference. Excellent ball striking without any back pain. I’m eager to get back out and work some more.

    • Eric,

That’s great. Make sure you are not hitting too many balls. I need practice swings even at the range. Focus on a position or two and perfect them. Glad you are getting it though.
