    With the grip for driver and others – method of left palm down with thumb against fingers a a little over center of club and two knuckles..what at the base of the hand is also is on club? the palm under the thumb or the palm under the pinkie? or what?

      If you have the thumb to the right of center, the thumb against the side of your hand and you see 2 knuckles the perfect amount of heel pad should be squeezed against the club. This is the whole point of doing it this way so you don’t have to judge how much heel pad to squeeze.

    Hi Paul.

    In the past the golf pro said I bounced up in my back swing. I cured that fault. I now coil and uncoil and do not have an upward seasaw motion thanks to you. I now have sense to go at a level coiling to he right foot’s instep and let the natural leverage and force generate the downswing’s shift and turn which you preach. To bounce up and down in my opinion ruins the rythm of biomechanical and kinesthetic nature of the back swing and the downswing generated at the right foot’s instep. 🙂

      Michael,

      Bouncing up and down is a real problem. This is a very inconsistent move because how to you come down exactly the same amount every time? Glad you got rid of it and are now coiling and uncoiling. Keep at it.

    Hey Pro, Having trouble with position of the right arm at the top of the back swing. Am I to straighten it out, push my wrist out or ?? It seem if I just let it happen I go to far, pass parallel which creates pushes and slices.

  4. This tip really helped me. I wasnt loading on the back leg much because I was focusing on getting my weight on my front leg better but actually putting weight on my right on my right instep I can better spring to my forward leg.

    So that is working great for me but could you explain more about lag and hitting down on the ball and having left back of hand straight (im right handed)? By that I mean no cupping forward wrist at impact. Im looking for that solid feel. Thanks.

  5. Paul. Can you help me with my drive. I am still coming down too steep most of the time. Do you think that I need to get my wt back on my heels more? At the start of the motion I am moving my wt back onto my back of my feet more. Any other ideas…………..

      Ralph,

      No you need to turn your arms off and start your lower body first in the downswing. Doing this right tilt your upper body behind the ball in the downswing and flattens the clubshaft. You are trying to hit. In doing so your upper body is leaning left in the downswing. Lean left and the club will swing down and left.

      So after explaining this you MUST work on turning your arms off. This will cause you to hit the ball shorter at first. KEEP DOING IT until you get used to it. This will get the arms out of the swing. Then and only then increase ONLY your legs and hips to get more power.

  6. Thanks Paul. I went out and tried today. Do I also have to make an effort to turn the right arm over so the club face straightens out. Without much effort the ball takes off to the right. So, no arms, but feel some power in right arm working or else the club face does not square…………

    OK working on rotating my waist, throwing my right knee forward while keeping my front leg straight. To get the feeling that I am WINDING waist/weight to my back foot and with such) FEEL a down shift (emphasizing a down shift) or slightly LOWERING the right side of my body onto my right leg and foot ….so I am downshifting or hitching back my right leg….. that way I get a FEELING that I am loading my right foot and TURNING my winding my waist while my knee faces forward. I have difficulty FEELING the WINDING up of my waist …and that’s the only way I can FEEL it. Will add the bounce. I little excited about at least getting a start relying on my body to to the work instead of my arms. I am 76 …. was shooting in the high 80s now my score has gone way up but some of the shots are soaring straight. Will add the bounce. That’s about it. I feel that I have one trainer …. with one method. So I am giving it my try. 76 is not old once you get there. Want to hit 80 by 80.

      Hugh,

      Anything you need to do to get it is fine with me. I just want people to get it and not everyone feels the exact same thing. So keep doing what you are doing and check it when you are done each time to be sure. The bounce is a way to feel the weight.

      Yes, I have students way older than you so you can certainly do it. 80 by 80 is a no brainer. Just do my positions and make your swing look like a better players swing. If you look like you can do it you will.

    What a timely tip for me Paul, thank you very much. I played last Monday and felt like all my shots were lacking “punch”. I watched this lesson (Pro’s give lessons, amateurs give tips!) and played Thursday. I was warming up doing the bounce and finally found some “punch”. Shot 1 over on front, 4 over on back (2 b’s, 1 dbl b) but the best part was my drives and approach shots all had punch. Made 13 of 16 fairways with a birdie on last final hole par 5. Great to be reminded of this, thanks again. Double overlap on grip is working real well with my left hand recovery.

      Not compressing the ball is definitely a sign of hitting with arms.

      Glad you worked on this. It got you to load on the back leg. From this loaded position your body is ready to be used. Don’t load (and coil) you will use arms. Keep this on in your pocket and do it regularly like I do.

    The “bounce” or the slight lowering of the upper body is seen in many top golfer’s swings.
    This move is obvious with BEN HOGAN.
    HENRIK STENSON demonstrates beautifully how he loads his back leg when going into his backswing.

      Yes, Stenson has a great move. Wish he would slow it down a little. I think he gets a little quick.

      Every other sport would have you with this back leg flexed anyone how would say otherwise thinks golf is not a sport.
