  1. Hi Paul

    Great tip and very timely

  2. Paul ,Could you elaborate once more ( You DID before ) on what the hips should do .
I follow what you said before :keep the Belly button looking in front OF you has much as possible ,thet restricts the turning OF YOUR hips :the shoulders Turn ,not That much the hips .
Others tell you not to restrict the HIP Turn ,and let it go .
OF course the shoulder Turn is then bigger ,but with nĂ´ benefit to the ” COILING THE SPRING “,and The entire swing is slowed .
    Please comment once more ?

    • Raymond,

Your shoulders should be moving your hips. If you are trying to keep the hips stable they will move half the amount of your shoulders because your shoulders cannot get to 90 without the hips moving half. The hips should be pulling the knees into position. If you do right the way I am suggesting they move into the correct position every time.

By getting the spring-like effect you have another power source in your swing so you do not have to hit with your arms. No spring-like effect what are you going to use to hit the ball? Answer: arms. If you are hitting with arm how can you ever square the face consistently when only a few degrees causes you to miss the fairway or green.

  3. Paul,

I have always struggled with OTT and I have found something that relates to this tip. I know that pros hips are much more open at impact than the normal amateur and this got me thinking.

If my hips are 45 degrees ahead of my shoulders (-45 v -90) at the top of the backswing and still 45 degrees ahead of my shoulders at impact (+45 v 0), then there is no uncoil between hips and shoulder until very close to impact. I have tried this and when I maintain the coil into the downswing it promotes a very nice on plane swing with no arm involvement at all and an effortless and consistent strike at the ball.

It feels as though I am hitting with through my glutes and I can turn as fast as I want with no loss of balance. At the moment, it feels as though the hands are very restricted by my sides but I’m working on that part.

  4. Paul to follow up my last point, if a high handicap player arrives at impact very square ie hips and shoulders at 0 degrees, then the coil has been fully unwound already by the time of impact.

    • Richard,

This is pretty close to what most amateurs are doing because they are just hitting with their arms. Usually the hips are around 15-20 degrees open with somewhat square shoulders. This has no spring-like effect and will never work.

Paul, on a 0 – 10 scale with 10 being the max I can cool, where should I be.

      James,

I am tight enough that if I hold the coil for more than a few seconds I am out of breath because this takes effort. So it is not about a level of tightness. It is about knowing you are tightly coiled. This coil is unmistakable.

So take it to the top and hold it. Then recognize if you feel tightly coiled in the forward lat. If so, you are tight enough. If not you are mot likely moving the lower too much.
