    Hi Paul,

I really like this tip. My problem has never been topping but hitting it fat with woods. Why is it that I hardly ever hit fat shots with my iron but more often than not with my woods. Apart from getting of my back foot to cure this problem has it got anything to do with the length of the club? Tq.

    • Herman,

I did a tip on this here:

      Drop Kick: https://ignitiongolf.com/cure-drop-kick

Same as a fat shot with an iron.

It is not he length of the club. It is the path you are swinging at. If you are coming in at it too much from the inside it will hit the ground. To attack too much from the inside would mean your whole upper body would be tilted too much to the right in the downswing. If you get off the back foot this causes you to not tilt too much. So you need to be working on feeling the weight coming off this back foot better, not sliding laterally in the downswing but turning instead, and just feel your whole upper body not angled too much right in the downswing. All of these things will be good for you to work on.

    Paul –

Thanks for this series. It helps a lot to see swing flaws in this organized way.
In today’s round, I worked on loose wrists by doing practice swings with early, aggressive release. It seemed to help not only direction and distance but also contact.

    Much appreciation,
    John

    • John,

Glad you are liking this series. This really is great information to know so you can fix your own swing. The hard part for people is remembering it. This is why I kept it simple.

  3. Hi Paul
This tip is so,so true, especially the part about slowing down. You gave me a couple of tips a few weeks ago to stop a slight urge to use my arms in the follow through causing pull shots. That helped a lot. Your tip: “touch your leg/ touch your head” also helped. I then remembered one of your earlier tips about slowing down and pretending to hit shots half the distance. The results of what feels now like a slow motion swing has given me fabulous results.I am hitting all my clubs better and straighter. The distance I am getting with my woods is also a huge suprise. Great tip. Thanks again. Gerry

    • Gerry,

All of those things you mentioned are the opposite to what you were doing. Interesting how that works isn’t it. Glad you are on track now.

  4. The thin shots is part of what I

    • Lotta,

The winter practice should have done a lot of good. You did all this without the ball. Now you are aware of your positioning and your swing positions should be starting to look better. Sounds like it is. Keep up the good work. Oh yeah, just because you can go outside does not mean you stop your indoor practice. Keep doing it.

  5. I experience the problem you touch on with my 3 Wood from the Fairway ,surprisingly not so with the 5 Wood ,and never , never with the mid irons or the hybrids 20 ,23,26 d

    • Raymond,

When do you usually hit a 3 wood?

      1. Why you are trying to get to a par 5 in 2 shots.

      2. When you are trying to make up for a bad tee shot.

These are 2 situations when you are trying to hit the ball a long way. What is your thought when you are trying to hit the ball a long way? Arms and hitting is the thought. So in these situations you have to tell yourself to swing a little easier.

When you stop at the top you are slowing down and taking your arms out of the swing.

    Paul,

Thanks for the tips. I’m a pretty analytical person, so your approach is really helpful. My big issue is certainly “trying” to hit the ball. I find the balance btwn being tight and loose somewhat difficult. I feel like if I’m too loose my whole form just goes to heck. I know the main point is to have loose wrist, but for the most part “control” everywhere esle. Any added advice on trying to find the right balance?

      Duc,

I would be working on very specific positions with the arms like hinging in the backswing, touch the head in the follow through and releasing the club down and through impact. You could throw some lag drill etc. in their too. All of these things require you to feel the arms as you are working on them. Once you get them then you are turning them off. When you play turn them off too. You cannot work on perfect positioning just by turning your arms off. If you do it will take you a lifetime if not longer to get it.

Just use the red nav bar at the top of each page to search out the sections you are working on. SWING TIPS > FULL SWING > THEN ARE OF THE SWING

So help your progress along by setting these specific positions and turning them off later. This is how I got it many years ago. I never turned the arms off until 1999. At this point I had been playing for over 20 years.

Hi Paul, I feel im still hitting fat even by moving off right side. Is there another cause ? such as putting weight to far on right foot in backswing (swaying) or arms moving to quickly in downswing. Sometimes I feel my arms come ahead of me even if I initiate with hips and get to follow through position.

    Your thoughts are much appreciated.

    Cheers

      Clint,

Yes, you do not want to be rocking the shoulders. This will not allow you to create torque. The sway to the outside of the foot is telling my you definitely have too much weight on this back foot at impact. Also, the over the top is telling us you are using your arms instead of your body to hit the ball. In doing so they are outpacing your body catching you on this back foot as you hit the ball. So you need to be standing tall in your setup. I just did a tip on this the other day here:

      Taller Setup: https://ignitiongolf.com/bartender-setup/

Then you need to be coiling and uncoiling. You should not even be working on this takeaway until you have perfected the coiling and uncoiling. So forget this for now. Work on this:

      Coiling: https://ignitiongolf.com/learn-coil-backswing
      Move Head: https://ignitiongolf.com/move-head-back/

You can do this drill too:

Sorry, just a follow on from my above comment. I think I have found my problem. Paul could the following chain of events be the cause of my fat shots and weak fades slices:

1- Takeaway: I followed the putting drill, but my shoulders rock they become steep what I think is coiling but more see saw
2- Backswing – because of my takeaway (rocking not turning) I get too far onto my right foot (outer)
3- Downswing – even though I fire with my lower body, my arms were already disconnected due to arms’y takeaway rocking the shoulders which throw my arms out and OTT.
4- Impact: inconsistent fat or slice. Fat because I am too far on right side and cant get back in time (swaying at take way) plus open club face and OTT.

So could my faulty initial sway/rocking as opposed to coil ruin everything that follows even if remaining moves are correct. If so it would explain a lot.

The coil vids have helped me understand. I can now feel the tightness.

    Cheers,

    C

Thanks Paul, I have checked those out. the helicopter drill worked a treat as well The rocking/swaying was really bad on my part. I just have a follow up question, regarding the coiling. If I had a plank of wood from my stomach and I coiled this would mean the arms go back severely under plane. So is it ok to have a degree of shoulder/arm elevation at the takeaway to counteract the club going way under on the takeaway. Im sure many have trained there arms to do this, but for me if I just turn arms off it goes way under plane than elevates when I bend elbow. If I slightly elevate as I coil shoulders than bend elbow, I can get full torque as well as not being too inside. Is this ok (sorry for the questions – last one to do with this )

  10. Hi Pau
My biggest problem is still the thin shot. I know I have to slow down and try to take my arms out of it . I seem to start out playing ok but as the round progresses I start into the same old habit which I have been trying to work on a lot by following your tips . Is there something that will help while playing when I start to get stuck again in the old habits . I try to slow down again but I guess I work myself into an anxious state especially if I’m not playing with my regular partners .Thanx

Hi Paul, Like I said in my last comment, playing two years and a senior female with a high handicap. I watched over and over again your 8 steps and was amazed at how much I learned. I especially honed in on the touch leg/touch head. I played today in our annual ladies tournament and came 1st in C Grade! I had 119 gross. I find your instructions totally engrossing and extremely thorough and however technical they are, I really understand them. Can’t wait to get better on my short game now. Many thanks. MJ

      MJ,

Very good! I love hearing about improvement and especially when people win!

Keep at it and you will win B or A flight next year.

Hi Paul, I simply enjoy your instruction. So technical yet so simple. Thank you. I try very hard to touch the leg, touch the head in all my strokes but there are times that I don’t do it but I don’t know why? Does this make sense. I try to do it every time but can’t. Can you offer me some suggestions, please? MJ

      MJ,

Thank you very much. I appreciate the feedback.

You are not doing the touch the legs touch the head because you are thinking of hitting or where the ball is going. You need to tell yourself to it. Even if this is long after the ball is gone. Plus, I am thinking about doing it at the moment I am starting down. Too many people let the ball and hitting distract them. So you need to replace the thought of hitting with touch the legs. Then after you hit the ball you then physically touch the head. The swing is not over until you feel these 2 things. You should also be doing 2 perfect practicing swings hitting these positions when you are playing before every shot. Now the though is in your mind before you actually do it.

If the positions are more important than the ball you will do them. If the ball is more important you won’t. Also, make sure you are doing tons of practice swings at home looking for the feedback of each position. The whole point of the feedback is so you can check them on your own. Keep doing them nightly and you will do them forever.

  13. HI Paul. Website is incredible. On this topic, I am using powerless arms, combo with touch the knees. I am have a problem coming in late with my lag, and either fat or push. Timing just isn’t in sync?
Any suggestions or tips to reference.

    • Donald,

Thank you so much. I truly appreciate it. We have put a ton of work into it since 2012 and will keep going.

Keep in mind you have timing between your arms and body. Right now they are timed at a certain speed. If you only speed one up the other will be late. If you are pushing it you are driving the lower harder and the release is late. Fat shots is your arms catching your weight on the back foot at impact.

Watch this tip and you will understand how to get more power:

All of my swing flaws are a result of not getting off my back foot SOON enough. After a good coil ,I get stuck on my back leg and hit pulls and/or fat shots….What is a drill to correct this!!!?

I have seen it pointed out that many pros get down in the legs or squat some in the down swing. I have not seen you mention anything like that, but I do see that your head goes down some. If your head goes down your body must be going down. I have tried that in the past with not very good results. What say you?

      Norman,

In no way do I want anyone to squat as the hit the ball. Sure, it may appear that a couple of them squat. I tried this years ago and hit it no where. Imagine watching me from the front (facing me). There is a gap in my knees. As I coil back the gap is still there but it has rotated so it appears to narrow. As I start to come down the gap faces you again so it appears to widen. Then it narrow again into the follow through. Telling people to squat is not what happens in the golf swing.

The tips below talks about when the head goes down.

I am trying to feel nothing in my arms. I can do it only if I keep my grip loose. I don’t know how you can tighten your grip to an 8 without tensing , at least your forearms. What am I missing? Please don’t say a brain✌

    Hi Paul,
I have been learning the body swing for the last month. I can now on an almost regular mode swing with the body and loose wrists and arms. What I notice is very straight shots with driver and irons but I seem to have more backspin than before causing the ball to go higher, not carry as far and be affected by head wind. What am I doing wrong ?
