Hi Paul. Philip here. Just a quick question about keeping the grip intact right throughout the swing. I think you’ve already answered it but I just want to be sure. I think in my efforts to loosen up my wrists, have powerless arms and keep grip pressure light – the fingers on my right hand tend to loosen and slip off the grip a little through impact and follow through. Am I correct in thinking that the grip should always be totally intact – no change – from the start of the swing to the finish?

Thanks as always for all the tips and advice. It’s like I’m still only beginning to ‘get it’ even though I feel I’ve been trying to get it for ages!!!!!! The impulse to ‘hit’ that golfball is very hard to overcome!!!!

      Philip,

The grip should be intact. This took me years to get. I got it once I loosened my wrists. No matter what I did before it never worked. Now, I don’t even think about it.

If you are letting go with the right hand through impact your grip is letting go. You need to be 8 out of 10 through impact but with loose wrists.

I really wouldn’t spend any time on this. Building great swing positions is more important right now. Once you have a great swing (that looks like a pros swing) then work on the subtleties like this.

Hi Paul need help to stop hitting at ball rather than hitting through the ball all your advice is simple to understand and very good. Robert

      Robert,

      Glad you like it. Thanks,

If you are hitting you need another thought to replace the thought of hitting.

      Think:

Coil going back – uncoil coming down.

or think of my follow through positions

or think of your downswing trigger

or think of not hitting anything

I had a tough time playing today and have a few questions?
Does rolling the wrists (clockwise) lead to rolling them open at impact? My right hand rolls under (open face).I tend to experience this mostly with the driver and longer woods and irons. I happen to watch the golf channel academy and noticed in their lesson that the club and arms are basically perpendicular to the target line at impact. I am struggling big time off the tee. I have lost a lot of distance (two months ago 240-260) and accuracy worsened as stated above. What is the position to strive for at impact? Thanks for your help.

  4. Hi Paul, I love your tips. When practicing loosing my wrists I find if I actively roll my forearms counter clockwise in the downswing I get a much snappier release. This is very noticeable when swinging my left arm with no club & going thumb up to thumb up. Please try it; you’ll see what I mean. Do you “consciously” roll your forearms? Please elaborate; I think I have stiff wrists; but I’m not sure. I have a Swing Speed Radar could that help to learn to loosen my wrists by measuring clubhead speed during drills? I also have the V1 golf video app that I really like. Could videos of my self swinging help to learn to loosem my wrists. BTW when I video myself swinging a club I find I lose my lag angle too
early in my downswing. Please list every drill, or method to loosen wrists & even determine if I actually have stiff wrists. BTW my driver CHS is 85-90, but I can swing a driver shaft at 110-120. HELP! Thanks Paul!
    John

  5. Hi Paul,

I first bought your book back in 2007 I think and have been a loyal subscriber for years, I truly believe in your method but my success has been elusive.

I have a video of myself swinging a driver from a couple of years ago that I was sharing with a friend and fellow golfer and something he noticed that I had not was how much I was tightening my shoulders on the downswing, I can already hear you saying “because you are trying to hit/wack the ball!!”.
Well I made an effort to relax my shoulders next time and lo and behold and my wrist hinge loosened up and “magically” added 20 yards to my drive. It appears my tension started at my shoulders and travelled on down to my wrists. Who would have thunk it?
Thanks for all you do, keep it up!

    • Christian,

Thank you for your continued support.

You just had a breakthrough. These are great. Now, you know exactly what I have been saying so you need to keep this feeling and do it on every shot. This will be a game changer.

      Keep up the good work.

  6. Paul ,It’s not only the wrists which are loose ,but also the fingers (I prefer saying they are “soft”),at least when you start the swing .Then of course the fingers tighten unconsiously so not to let go of the club .
There’s a good training aid to help ingrain the hinge/re hinge move :it’s called the “Impact snap” :you can train with it ,sitting on your sofa, watching the TV !
Less cumbersome than a golf club .

    • Raymond,

I checked out the device. Not sure about it. The guy makes it way to complicated. Simple. You could save the $100 and just use a club.

    Hi Paul,
I think I am doing the swing correctly, when I reach the top of my backswing I can feel the club continue a bit further to parallel with the ground, because my wrists are loose. When I feel the club stop that is when I turn my hips. Do you feel something similar? You had a tip some weeks (months?) ago that somehow got deleted from my mail before I could see it. It had something to do with what stopped you on the backswing. Could you point me to that?
    thanks,
    ter

      Terry,

I don’t mind it going a little past if you are coiling to 90 degrees. If you coil 80 and the club goes past then this would be a little too long. The tip be the one below. Not sure. What you should be doing is coiling back. Once you feel the torque you are at the top. So let this determine your backswing length.

You can find any of my tips by going to the homepage. They are all listed there in order.

I appreciate your response to me. I remember Jim Flick and his comment about runaway/catchup and am confused by the initial timing of arms and body?

  8. There’s nothing to be confused about .When you feel you are fully coiled ,the muscles of your back are taught and tell you so,then you just push your belly button forwards and that’s it .
Just look at the LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIPS ,thats exactly what they do ,no frills ,and bang ,the ball sails away foreever

It does sail away and rarely straight.. Thats great advice for the body – not for the arms. Runaway catch up – Jim Flicks term when the body outraces the arms. The opposite happens when the arms move quickly and before the body. What is the body/arm relationship – best videos to watch? Thanks

      John,

In no way do I teach a Flick arms swing. Over the years I have taught numerous Flick followers. There were the tightest arm swingers I have ever seen.

If you work on loosening and you are rarely straight doing so you are doing it wrong. The arm unit is one part of the swing. If you grip is wrists loose you will hook it off the planet. This is a unit that hinges. Even Flick would have agreed your wrists hinge in the backswing. If something hinges it would then re-hinge. A hinge is life is loose. The looser it is the faster it swings.

So you have this arm unit that is loose. You then connected this arm unit to your body which is like a spring. It coils then it uncoils. So you are not even thinking of hitting anything with the arms. You are hitting it with the spring-like effect of the body which is how you get it incredibly consistent. So although you may have tried one part of it you didn’t know or try the whole thing so of course you couldn’t keep it straight.

So if you are here and following me I need to you see it differently. There is no power in the arm unit. It hinges and re-hinges. That’s it. To get this you many have to work on it. In doing so you may have to feel the arms and wrists for a while until it loosens up.

Once you get this you are working on coiling and uncoiling your body to get the spring-like effect. Once you get this you will hit it incredibly straight.

So you also need to see the shots differently too. Your wrists affect spin. You body affects direction. So you want your ball and this tells you exactly what you need to work on.

i have too many tips on coiling and uncoiling on the site to list here. Just go to the red navigation bar. On the right is a search box. Type in what you are looking for an all tips on that topic will come up ie: coil, uncoil, hinge, release etc.

  10. Dear Mr SUJAT,If you look carefully at the demonstration PAUL WILSON gives in his video ,the arms cannot outrace the core ,neither can they lag behind :his arms are tied or tucked to the core ,he squeezes (lightly!)the interior upper part of his arms to his chest .
You have to do this to have the arms and the core work in unison :the core is the center of the wheel and the arms are the spokes linked to the axle .
