    Paul –
An additional way to be inconsistent is the backswing. After playing poorly today, I figured out that I was coming too far inside on my backswing. Any thoughts on avoiding this error?
    Thanks,
    John

Paul, I have searched all of your DVDs looking for your preferred teeing position when using an iron on a par three. I am aware of your method to determine where the ball should be in the stance on a fairway. With a driver, you indicate a slight upward path at the moment of impact but nowhere can I find direction on teeing off with an iron. Do you recommend the use of a tee that is low? If so, should the iron be going slightly down or slightly up at impact? When I tee for a slight upward swingpath, I often times hit too high and consequently short. Yet, if the ball teed in the “fairway” position, get even less distance – probably because I am driving the tee deeper into the ground and losing and compression. Thanks for considering my question and giving some advice, Roy

      Roy,

If you can use a tee use a tee. This way less grass will be between the ball and the clubface. Because you are teeing up and iron it does not mean you are swinging up at it. The ball is just above ground level on the tee. The you do your normal swing. Don’t change it.

I think this is the video you are looking for:

If you are swinging up at it you will hit it too high. If you are teeing the ball lower I get the feeling you are trying to hit down. Do not hit down. I just did a tip on this. The descending blow will occur due to the right fundamentals. So you coil going back and uncoil in the downswing with the arms powerless.

Howdy again, Thanks for the answer and the references. I fear though, that I misstated the question. I would like to know where in the stance I should play a low teed -up ball, when using an iron or hybrid. We have one hole where I use an 8 iron to tee off. The green is 110 yds away, probably 35 – 40 feet higher in elevation, with a tree limb overhanging the path about 25 to 30 yards in front of the tee mound with a deep ravine separating them. I am currently playing the ball slightly back of where I would play a fairway shot and tee off on the ground. If I use a tee, I invariably hit that branch and lose a ball. If I play the ball a little more forward in the stance, I overshoot the green or hit the branch.

One of our par 4s has a deep ravine about 160 yds out. The green is another 110 yds and almost perpendicular to the fairway where I try to land. This shot requires a hybrid (5 iron) for me. Thanks for your help, Roy

          Roy,

If you are trying to keep it low you need to be playing it even farther back. Maybe not back as far as a knock down shot but far enough back to de-loft the club. Keep in mind that when you play it back you could end up swinging too much inside out due to the ball not being at the widest point of the arc. If this is the case you need to aim your whole body left to compensate for it.

Here is the knock down shot:

Please clarify something for me regarding the right hand grip. When I place the club in the fingers (middle knuckles) of the first three fingers, is the entire pad of the ring finger on the grip (as for the middle finger). I have a tendency to let this finger ride up onto the forefinger of the left hand and would like to know for sure that I should work on correcting this.

Chad, the ring finger of the right hand should be fully on the club. So start your grip a 1/4 higher up on the grip. Wrap the fingers on then move the right hand down 1/4 inch until it butts against the left hand. This way it will not be riding up onto the left forefinger.

      Rich,

The videos in the archive are hosted on the Amazon s3 server which is used by thousands of large companies including Netflix. If the videos are playing slowly this would most likely be your system or connection speed. I have not received and complaints from US members. I have only had a few from people living in remote areas. You should try watching them on a different computer. If they are still slow it is your connection speed. If they play fine it would be your computer/software.

Make sure you update the flash and browser software on your computer too. This may help.
