I guess I don’t understand this tip Paul. You say that you start out with the arms outstretched, but they don’t stretch out again until after impact. I assume that is because the hip is open at impact, but not at address. Is that correct?

Greetings Coach / Thanks for the feedback / my todays feedback /we are running out of time here in ohio so i want to get this right before the end of the season / at the range today took a 7 iron/ 5 fairway metal and a hybred 4 iron /started with the 7 iron hitting pitch shots /my set up/2 out of 10 grip /powerless arms /i had to really think about that at first /my swing thought was “turn” but everything turned when i used it so i said out loud “buckle turn” a fraction before the start of the down swing and that worked /took my mind off hitting something /good results 95% of the time/on full swing 7 iron took divots /Same good results with 5 fairway metal and hybred / No divot with those clubs/ my question /and im not sure i want to know the answer because im feeling good now about everything /do you have to take a divot in order to know that all is right with the swing? / not 100 % satisfied with everything you understand Also i feel that my arms are extended about a foot after impact /ive checked

      John,

Your first thought should always be grip and setup so keep remembering to check this.

You should be taking a very slight divot with most irons. Longer irons you would brushing the grass. Do you need to take a divot? Yes, if the great majority of pros take a divot you should too. You take the divot due to the right fundamentals. So as your swing gets better you would take a divot all the time. If you are seeing divots then keep doing what you are doing.

Also, winter is the best time to be working on your swing so even if you hand up the clubs you need to be doing regular practice swings at least 3 times per week working on your positions. If you work on it all winter you will play great golf right out of the gate when the season starts.

    Paul,
You have earlier spoken about swinging slow and only hit the ball 2/3 of normal distance. I can do this with a full swing, but I cannot get the ‘old hitting distance’ even if I swing at 80 percent. I am obviously doing something wrong but are not sure of what it is.I am using a very light driver, do you recommend a heavier one in order to get the arms stretched out ? It is more diffcult to feel the weight of the club with a very light one.

    Hi Paul;
Yet another great tip just by explaining it differently than I’ve ever heard & makes perfect sense. I was always under the impression that your arms had to be fully stretched at impact rather than after.

      Michael,

Glad you liked it. Extending fully at impact would cause fat shots. Just make sure that from now on you are moving this extended arm position past the ball. This should help a lot.

Your feelings series has been superb I have an anatomical question on the downswing. There are times when you demonstrate keeping your head behind the ball in line with the axis of your spine and if I drew a line from the top of your head down your spine all was in line. However, when you actually do your swing your head stay behind the ball at Impact but is now verticle to the gound.
Help me understand why. The head seems to separate from the axis. Thanks

      Bruce,

Glad you like the feelings tips.

My head position separating from the spine axis int he downswing is just the way it comes down. Not sure why. I will have to think about it. I just watch a Tiger video from 2011 and the brim on his hat is level too. Rory’s is just slightly tilted.

If your head was perpendicular to the spine coming down and the spine was tilted I don’t think you would see the ball properly plus you would probably hit about a foot behind the ball because it would cause you to swing up at it too much. So I think I am really just trying to visually look at the ball with both eyes equal. If my head tipped right I would not see it out of my left eye.

I really wouldn’t worry about it. Instead focus on the spine tilt behind the ball.

Paul, Bravo! Problem discussed, solution explained and explained in terms that anyone can see and duplicate. (Were you or are you a physicist or engineer in your career?) I ask this as you always explain the mechanics of the golf swing clearly and then expound on it to drive it home. This reminds me of some of my favorite professors in school, as they explained the hows and whys of a concept or problem and also the solution and by doing so, made it stick with me). I get this one too.
    Cheers!

      Bradley,

No, I was not or am not an engineer, physicist, school teacher, professionally trained teacher etc.

I am just a guy who could not get my questions answered by some of the best teachers in the world for over 10 years and I was playing and practicing every day. If I couldn’t get the answers, very few others have them either which is not right in my book.

My thought has always been “tell me why I need to do it then I will think it is important and I will keep doing it” if you cannot tell my “why” then why would I think it is important?

Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.

Glad you like and understand it.
