Paul, very good tip on standing tall, but the most important info from this tip is that you are all ways in balance. Leaning over you can’t be in balance and will fall forward. Try to jump straight up in this position and you can’t, because you are not in balance. Put your weight on your heals and bend over like you demonstrated and try to jump straight up and you will fall backwards. The only way you can be in balance for a golf shot is to stand up like you demonstrated. In your position you should be able to lift you toes up and down and not fall forward or backwards if your weight is distributed evenly. I call them happy feet.

      Randy,

I like that thought of jumping up from this position. Hopefully, everyone starts to stand taller. It really is a lot easier.

What kind of grip do you use and will it have to change if a more bent posture was used? the divot will still have to be along the whole length of the blade of the club. seems to me like this will require a grip change.

  3. Paul ,This is your best lesson ever (Together with “Point A to Pont B,”Touch your legs ,touch your shoulders “,Powerless arms”,Loose Wrists )
It’s the foundation of good golf.
There has been a fad for the MOE NORMAN one plane swing ,which obliges you to have a more tilted postion at address:this does effectively give you the impression that you can develop more power .
Many tour players have this inclined postion ,TIGER WOODS is not the sole example .
I tried it myself as I previously told you ,and found it most uncomfortable an anti natural ,so I reverted on your advice to the two plane swing ,standing more erect .

      Raymond,

Exactly. For some reason they are trying to re-invent the wheel. The best swings of all time were tall. It’s mind boggling that tour players of today would go the opposite direction. My money is on the best of all time.

To uncoil faster you need to move faster. You are not good at it. Just keep doing the swings off the ground as I have suggested. When you do them do them as hard and as fast as you can. This will build up your speed. Also, use the Ultimate Swing Trainer for your hips.

  4. Paul, looks pretty simple to me, too, however: The shorter the clubs, the more I have the feeling to more have to lean forward. The sensation of coiling and uncoiling is the best being erected, but as soon as I take a club into position, there’s no sensation to be felt anymore 🙁

  5. Paul,

I had a question about the release of our wrist you mentioned at the beginning of this lesson. I am curious what percentage of the club head speed is generated by the wrist release compared to our hip turn. Sometimes I feel that I concentrate too much on the hip turn and not enough on the release.

      Dom,

I have heard that it is 85% of the power comes from the release. The problem is this has to be connected to something. This something is the turning center. Try hitting a ball without turning your shoulders. Good luck. So you need loose wrists so they release properly. You need to connect this to your rotating body. So both are important.

  6. Thanks to this blog ,I ‘ve just seen your previous Video”Where does THE Power come from “.I hadn’t seen it before. It’s spectacular. You swing so effortlessly to reach that 118 MPH clubhead Speed .
Following your advice ,I do work hard to speedup my lazy and taught hips ,with THE ULTIMATE SWING TRAINER ,among others ,but progress is non existant ,I utilize also THE SWING CHAIN which is excellent for THE hip movement.
In THE Video I have of BEN HOGAN ,you see what tremendous energy and Speed h

    Hey Paul,

This lesson has been a big breakthrough for me, a beginner golfer, by taking my mind off of the ball and thinking point A to point B, coiling and uncoiling. In fact, I stopped looking at the ball altogether and only concentrated on the swing, and connected with the ball better than ever. I found that through repetition of this exercise I started to look at the ball only out of the corner of my eye as I was swinging which seemed to free up and relax my swing. Maybe I should not look at the ball at all after the initial club placement and just swing from A to B? Do you think keeping my eye on the ball through the entire swing is important?

Thanks for all of your great lessons and the effort that you put into explaining things in such good detail for us!

      Janet,

Glad you like the tips. I truly appreciate the feedback and support.

It is important in the sense that you should be watching what you are hitting plus you don’t want to come out of the shot too early. If you lift up you will top it or hit it thin. If whatever you are doing is really working I would keep doing it until you are good at it. You can always watch the ball later once you are consistent.

    Hi Paul,
It seems to me that a too tilted setup would make hitting the ground before the ball a common occurrence for us amateurs. i know i have torn up the driving range more than i should. i realize it is my right arm taking over and digging up the turf. The taller setup and powerless arm feeling are improving me so that in the future i won’t be considered the scourge of the groundskeepers.
    thanks,

      Terry,

This is one of the may things that tilting too much at address will cause. Funny, I keep hearing commentators talking about various pros working on standing taller now Rory, Fowler etc. It seems the day of the tilted set up are numbered. Thankfully. Tiger needs to wake up. He was not this low when he was the best golfer in the world.

  9. Working on being tall in my swing but what way should the knees be bent or fairly straight can you clarify this Paul thanks

I have been using a taller setup. In doing so however I think I took it too much to the extreme and I’m too vertical. Could u comment on this?
