    If so how far out does it need to be?

    Very interesting and helpful exercises ,Jérémy .There are several more “balance “exercises ,without a club in the hands to be done ,on one foot or the other :I think you showed some of them some time ago .
    Could you please reiterate them.
    It’s also useful to swing barefooted (as did SAM SNEAD ) to feel where your weight is .

    Jeremy,

    I don’t know if you have ever tried this but it works. After you feel set up, try to push your feet more into the ground using the middle of your feet, just flex up & down just a little & you will feel the balance.
