Paul: Can you give me a link to a video on what the flaw is and how one should fix it correctly if, when properly aligned square to the target, my shots go left of the target, and, if I am trying hard to keep arms powerless and rotate hips, I also get a draw which takes it even farther left? I know I should not to align right, which is what I feel I must do when actually playing. (I am trying to make full back-swing and follow-through, but that does not resolve issue, normally.)

  2. Very useful tip, Paul. I also find it helpful to carefully place a tee in the ground at each end of the alignment stick once I have it placed correctly. This will help to replace it where it belongs if it gets nudged or kicked accidentally while practicing without starting the entire alignment process over again.

Thanks for this Paul. Seeing how to setup the parallel line is great.would you set up this way to practice chipping? I noticed a college player on the range with a perpendicular stick running from the alignment stick through/between his feet. He was placing the ball just in front of the meeting point. Is that a method for checking ball placement? Other?

    Thanks again.

Thank you Paul for this tip. It affirms what I teach to my golfers…..some times they say I am being “too exact” and I say inches off line at set up/ address at the ball @ 150 yards from the target can equal yards off line when the ball reaches the target. This is so essential to teach when working on chipping as the feedback/ results of good alignment is so close and clear. So as I teach Juniors and my High School golfers I drill this practice habit home early then when lining up on the range they take the time to set up their practice station correctly. I make sure that the golfer understand how aim and alignment are two different things and we the student of golf understands the value of a tip like this and it hits home and reinforces as my team members call it my being ” “too exact” So thank you at least I know I am on the right track! Paul someday I will be out there for lessons! Don the 93 year old who helps me Coach and watches your DVDs weekly has highlighted your book and made notes on each page. Will hit a good shot and say ” thank you Paul Wilson”. Thought you would enjoy knowing that. Make a good day. Coach Ahrns. Ohio

      Deborah,

I’m glad you are teaching them the importance of this. I wish everyone would do it and everyone would explain how to do it. To many people just rush through it. This is the worst thing people could do.

Just let me know when you can make it. I am waiting for you (and Don if he can make it). It will be pleasure to finally meet the both of you.

Just some Typos on the how to put down an alignment stick….
In this tip I show you exactly how to place an alignment stick on the ground. You may think this is no big deal but it’s pretty rare when I actually someone no only use an alignment sick never mind place it correctly on the practice tee while practicing. After watching this tip make sure you are not only using an alignment stick but you are doing so properly.

Hi Paul. Thanks for the instruction.
If we are aiming to hit a pin 150 yards away do we align the first alignment (hitting) stick, as you said, ” exactly at the pin”?
Do we then align the second stick (which we align our feet, hips and shoulders with) several paces from and parallel to the first stick so the second stick is “parallel left” of the pin?

How do we adjust these sticks for pin placements much closer where we are hitting a wedge, or much farther away where we are a fairway wood?

      James,

You are laying the sticks down as a guide.

You place the first stick at the pin regardless of how far away the pin is. You lay a second stick down parallel to the first stick about a foot away from it. You pickup the first stick because that is where you are going to hit your golf balls from. Now you are aligned properly.

You do not have to adjust anything if you are looking farther or closer. If the pin in left or right then you need to do this whole alignemnt stick placement again.

I did that tip here: Change Clubs Change Alignment: https://ignitiongolf.com/change-clubs-change-alignment/

I show exactly how to lay down the stick in this tip:

This is crystal clear now. Thanks. My confusion stemed from an incorrect notion that you taught us, on the course, to aim 4 yards left of the pin with a wedge and progressively farther left with longer clubs up to 15 yards left with a fairway wood or driver.

Great tip. I’ve got to the stage in my game where I strike the ball well most days on the course but my alignment’s bad so I end up in trouble. Is it within the rules to lay a club down to aim during a competition as long as I pick it up before making my swing? That would help.

An outstanding lesson for those who go to the driving range and who are allowed to hit balls from the turf ,a very rare occurrence nowadays when you have worn out mats most of the time .
Now ,it would be most useful that you run again the video on how to align yourself when you are playing “real ” golf on the course
You’re not allowed several minutes to get your alignement right ,10 seconds should be considered a maximum ,over 30 seconds preparing a shot is considered “slow play”.
So you have to be deliberate ,accurate and fast .Please show us again how to acheive that !
